Whether you’re chasing Cabo’s famous golden hour or just the first margarita of the trip, your entire vacation vibe hinges on how fast you clear Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).
After crunching flight schedules, airport statistics, and hundreds of traveler reports, we at The Cabo Sun can confirm that Saturday—especially 11 a.m.–3 p.m.—is the “pressure-cooker” window to avoid.
Saturdays routinely funnel 12,000+ arriving passengers on as many as 155 flights, while Sunday comes in a not-so-distant second at roughly 139 arrivals.
The good news? A few strategic moves—like flying mid-week and pre-booking transport—flip the script so you hit the sand long before the crowds.

Why Saturday Is Cabo’s Congestion King
Los Cabos’ popularity has exploded; the airport handled 7.7 million passengers last year and just green-lit a US$370 million expansion to keep up.
Because most weekly resort packages still run Saturday-to-Saturday, airlines bunch their schedules, creating a weekend spike that local press has warned about since at least 2023.
Insider blogs add that the worst lines form between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when multiple wide-bodies land back-to-back.
Mid-Week = Easy Mode
Travel-data studies show Tuesday and Wednesday departures to Mexico score the lowest fares and the lightest loads, giving you a double win: cheaper tickets and shorter queues.

The 5-Step Saturday Survival Guide
1. Immigration Reality Check
SJD has rolled out e-Gates and automated kiosks to shave wait times, but staffing hiccups can still cause bottlenecks during the Saturday surge.
2. Baggage-Claim Patience Play
Even after a quick stamp, checked bags can lag 30-90 minutes on peak weekends, according to recent traveler threads. Nominate one “bag spotter” while the rest of the crew hits the restroom or ATM.
3. The Infamous “Shark Tank” Gauntlet
After customs, you’ll enter a hall packed with timeshare and transport touts. Frequent visitors call it the “shark tank” and advise one rule: Do. Not. Stop. Walk straight outside to your pre-arranged driver.
4. Finding Your Ride in the Crowd
Cabo lacks Global Entry kiosks and doesn’t allow rideshares to pick up curbside, so pre-book a licensed shuttle and memorize its logo/uniform; reps hold company signs beyond the glass doors. Ignore anyone claiming to be “your driver” unless the branding matches.

Timing Tricks That Really Work
| When You Land | Crowd Level | Why It’s Smart |
|---|---|---|
| Before 11 a.m. | Low | First wave beats the arrival bunching |
| Tuesday–Thursday (any time) | Very Low | Mid-week lull plus cheaper fares |
| After 4 p.m. | Moderate | Midday wave processed; shorter queues |
| Saturday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. | Very High | Max congestion—avoid if possible |
Quick-Hit Hacks From Frequent Flyers
- Carry-on only: Skip baggage claim entirely
- Screenshot pick-up point: Many shuttles use “Umbrella #5” or a numbered pole; a photo keeps you laser-focused when exiting

Bottom Line
Land on a Saturday and you could spend your first Cabo hour in a queue—or you can outsmart the crowds.
Book a Tuesday-to-Thursday flight, target an early-morning or post-4 p.m. slot, breeze past the shark tank with a pre-arranged ride, and you’ll be poolside sipping Baja’s best before most Saturday stragglers clear customs.

My wife and I have owned a timeshare in Cabo since 1993. Yes,traffic has picked up everywhere. Used to have low season. Used to could get better pricing on many items that are now fixed. Cruise ships once we're verboten too. Oh well. I believe, since it's popularity has exploded, the resorts should allow check-ins any day of the week to use for your week on site. Yes,it can be done. Really, look at all the other changes. Anything is possible. Could be a good selling tool since some of us have forked out a lot of money over many years so all you 3 to 4 day Expedia travelers can use the properties we have paid for and can come almost anytime. Just saying...
