Although the Los Cabos area is considered by tourists and locals to be safe, officials still continue to implement measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. And now that the busy tourist season is just around the corner, security measures are being ramped up in order to continue to make Cabo a safe place to visit. One of the ways that this is being done is by enhancing security through conducting regular security tours and increasing video surveillance efforts at the popular Medano Beach and at the Cabo marina, both located in Cabo San Lucas.
Cabo San Lucas is the busier of the two cities that make up Los Cabos, with San Jose del Cabo typically being quieter and more laid back compared to its highly popular counterpart. The cruise port in Cabo San Lucas is the destination for thousands of cruise passengers every year, and many of the tourists who fly into Los Cabos International Airport are destined for Cabo San Lucas as well. The vacation destination is extremely popular among American tourists and is known for its breathtaking landscape of desert and sea, its luxurious all-inclusive resorts, the opportunity for water sports, and its fast-growing food scene.
Los Cabos has become so popular in recent months that it has actually surpassed other highly visited vacation destinations in popularity. While Cancun continues to remain the most visited beach destination in the country, Los Cabo has made it to second place this year, surpassing another very popular Mexican vacation destination, Puerto Vallarta. During the busy months earlier in the year, as many as 250,000 tourists were arriving at Los Cabos International Airport every month.

Now, another busy season is approaching as tourists from colder destinations like the U.S. and Canada look to escape the winter weather. Winter is a great time to get away to Los Cabos for many reasons, like the prime opportunity to go whale watching, as these majestic creatures migrate to the area to mate and give birth. The winter months are also perfect for enjoying outdoor activities in Cabo too, due to the milder temperatures, abundant sunshine, and lack of rain.
In the first half of 2022, more than 2 million tourists vacationed in Los Cabos, breaking pre-pandemic tourism records. Now, more than a million American tourists have already booked winter vacations in either San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas for this year. The expected arrival of so many tourists has led officials to make a plan to provide extra security in the area, particularly in areas frequented by tourists, like the marina and Medano Beach.
Medano Beach
Medano Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Cabo San Lucas because it sits right in town. It is also one of the few beaches in the area that are actually safe for swimming, as many are not due to the presence of dangerous rip currents. This beach is also where you’ll find vendors selling everything from souvenirs to snacks, unlike on some of the more private beaches.
Cabo Marina
The marina area is also very popular among tourists, and not just those disembarking from cruise ships. The area has plenty for tourists to do. Not only do most of the boat tours leave from this area, but there is great shopping near the marina, some fantastic restaurants, and a Cultural Pavilion where theater shows and various performances are held.
Officials in Los Cabos have recently decided to permanently keep military in the area to help protect tourists because there aren’t enough police officers. Now some of that military personnel will be deployed to two of the busiest tourist areas in the city, further securing the safety of visitors to one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world.
