One of the classic Los Cabos hotels, the Tropicana Inn, just 500 feet from Plaza Mijares in San Jose del Cabo, is being reborn this year.

In the third quarter of the year, after extensive updating, the hotel will be opened as the brand new Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.

The Tropicana Los Cabos Tapestry Collection by Hilton will sit at the crossroads between traditional Mexican style and the upscale luxury settings that have reinvented the new Los Cabos.

The new Hilton resort is following the trend evident across new and newly renovated properties located in Los Cabos.

They all seem to be focusing on preserving the classical Mexican heritage style while offering upgraded amenities and features that are in demand by today’s Los Cabos guests.

The 70 rooms and two suites of the Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton will bring the classic architecture around San Jose del Cabo’s Plaza Mijares indoors for guests.

Traditional ceramic tiles and dark wood furniture complement the splash of ocean blue color and authentic Baja California Sur artwork in the guest rooms.

The amount of investment in updating and upgrading the Tropicana Inn was not disclosed in the company news release about the project.

Building Hilton in Baja California

The new Tropicana Los Cabos Tapestry Collection by Hilton complements the conversion of the famous Perla La Paz to a Hilton Tapestry Collection property at the same time.

The hotel brand is spending $10 million to renovate that historic La Paz hotel property built in 1940.

There are currently 115 Hilton Tapestry Collection hotels around the world, with an additional 100 currently in development.

The two renovations and property updates reflect a new strategy by Hilton to introduce its new Tapestry Collection of hotels to Baja California.

“The Pacific Coast of Mexico represents an integral role in Hilton’s larger organic growth strategy across this diverse destination as we look to bolster our presence with world-class brands and add to our portfolio of award-winning hotels in Baja California,” said Mario Carbone, managing director, development, Mexico and Central America, Hilton in a company statement.

The two new Hilton-branded hotels will join two other luxury resorts in Los Cabos carrying the Hilton brand names. They are the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal and Hilton Los Cabos.

The New Los Cabos

It was bound to happen. As Los Cabos became more popular with luxury travelers, the classic and traditional Los Cabos hotels were going to be acquired and renovated as new boutique hotels for luxury travelers.

That’s what’s happening with the updating and upgrading of both the Perla La Paz hotel in La Paz and the Tropicana Inn in San Jose del Cabo.

It’s a trend that is expected to continue as the traditional hotels evolve to boutique resort properties owned by larger companies.

The older hotels could not keep up with the luxury services and amenities of the larger chains and are being reborn for the new luxury travel segment popular in Los Cabos.

What Visitors Need to Know

According to Hilton’s online reservation site, the Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton is expected to open for reservations in April and is targeted for a third quarter opening.

Meanwhile, the 90-room Perla La Paz, Tapestry Collection by Hilton was not even showing up in April searches for hotels in La Paz.

The renovation of the two hotels blazes a new path for these properties in Baja California Sur. Their traditions will carry on for a new generation of luxury travelers with their updated and upgraded boutique resort experience.

Meanwhile, some long time visitors may feel that Los Cabos and La Paz may be losing some of their small town charm. What used to be older and lower-priced accommodations will soon be available at much higher luxury room rates.
