With Tropical Storm Eugene off the coast of Los Cabos, three popular beaches have been closed by the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone agency in the area.

Tropical Storm Eugene

The National Meteorological Service is tracking Tropical Storm Eugene just to the southwest of Los Cabos.

The storm is just about approaching hurricane strength, with winds clocked at 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts near 140 kilometers per hour.

Eugene would have to hit 119 kilometers per hour to be a level-one hurricane. It is expected to become a hurricane as it continues its northwesterly turn toward the Pacific Ocean.

While it is not expected to directly hit Los Cabos, heavy rainfall, winds, and surf are expected for the next couple of days.

Black Flags Posted

Because of the threat of heavy surf and dangerous rip currents, local authorities placed black flags on three popular beaches in Los Cabos.

El Medano beach with people enjoying the sun and sand

The main impact on Los Cabos tourists will be the black flag posting and the resulting closure of El Médano beach.

El Médano Beach is located in the heart of the tourist zone of Los Cabos and is arguably the most popular local beach for visitors to the beach resort destination.

The beach will be off-limits to travelers to Los Cabos until the waves and dangerous currents subside.

Despite the closure of the beach, it is expected that the restaurants and bars located along El Médano Beach in Los Cabos will remain open and accessible to tourists. However, local officials are monitoring the safety of the situation.

Other popular beaches in Los Cabos that are closed due to the dangerous weather impacts of Tropical Storm Eugene include El Corsario and Palmilla beaches.

Palmilla is another popular beach for visitors to Los Cabos.

It’s a good time to remind tourists to Los Cabos about the beach flag safety program put into place to protect tourists from hazards in the water.

The black flag, which is posted at El Médano, Palmilla, and El Corsario beaches in Los Cabos, means the beach is closed due to life-threatening conditions. In this case, it is heavy waves and strong rip currents.

Once the storm starts to move away from Los Cabos, local authorities may choose to post a yellow flag at the beach. This indicates that the beach is still very dangerous, but swimmers can enter the water at their own risk.

When the all clear is given, and Eugene moves away on his northwesterly course, local beach authorities will post a green flag.

Just like a stop light, the green flag indicates that the conditions in the water for diving, swimming, and bathing are considered safe.

There are two other flags, red which indicates the water is unsafe for health reasons, and white which indicates the presence of jellyfish in the water.

What it Means For Visitors

It is very important that Los Cabos visitors observe the beach flag system at all times to ensure their safety.

Local officials are very concerned with the health and safety of guests to Los Cabos and want to make sure precautions are put in place, especially with tropical weather systems.

While Tropical Storm Eugene may be doing a pass-by visit to Los Cabos for his vacation, he will soon be on his way, and travelers to the beach resort destination will be able to get back in the water and enjoy their trip to Los Cabos.

In the meantime, for the safety of everyone involved, please stay out of the water on the three closed beaches and instead enjoy the majestic fury of Tropical Storm Eugene from a safe distance on the shoreline.
