The Red Light Panic: What Actually Happens When You Get Stopped At Cabo Customs

Share The Article

You’ve landed at SJD, breezed through immigration, grabbed your luggage off the carousel, and can practically taste your first poolside margarita. But standing between you and the exit doors is one final, unpredictable hurdle: the infamous Los Cabos customs button.

It is a rite of passage for anyone traveling to the Baja peninsula. You step up to the podium, push the button, and wait for the “Red Light, Green Light” verdict. A green light means you are clear to walk out into the sunshine. A red light means you have just won a secondary luggage inspection.

The Red Light Panic What Actually Happens When You Get Stopped At Cabo Customs

If you get red-lighted this year, there is absolutely no need to panic. Here is exactly how the SJD customs system works, what agents are aggressively looking for in 2026, and how to handle a bag search like a seasoned traveler.

The Reality: It Is Not Just About The Button

While the traffic light button is the most famous part of the process, it is not the only factor that dictates whether your bags get searched.

Before you even reach the podium, your luggage passes through an initial X-ray machine. Additionally, SJD customs actively deploys K9 units to patrol the baggage claim area.

Customs inspection

If an X-ray operator spots a dense cluster of electronics, or if a dog flags your suitcase, you will be pulled aside for a manual inspection—regardless of whether you hit a green light at the kiosk. The button adds a layer of randomized screening, but the agents are always watching the physical x-ray feeds first.

The 2026 Crackdown: What Are They Looking For?

If you are selected for a manual search, the agents are not looking to confiscate your sunscreen or judge your swimsuit choices. They are hunting for specific, high-value, or prohibited items that trigger heavy import taxes and immediate fines.

  • Vapes and E-Cigarettes: This is the number one reason tourists are getting fined in 2026. Electronic smoking devices are strictly illegal to import into Mexico. If a customs agent finds a nicotine vape in your bag, it will be confiscated, and you will be hit with an on-the-spot fine that typically starts around $200 USD.

  • THC and CBD Products: Your medical marijuana card from California or Canada means absolutely nothing in Mexico. Bringing THC gummies or weed pens across international borders is a federal crime and will escalate a routine bag check into a massive legal nightmare.
  • The Electronics Limit: Mexico has strict duty-free limits to prevent people from importing goods to sell. The general rule is one laptop, two cameras, and three cellphones per person. If you show up with multiple iPads, a massive pelican case full of lenses, or an oversized drone, expect to be hit with a hefty import tax (often 19% of the item’s value). Rule of thumb: Keep it personal use only and you will be fine.
  • Undeclared Cash: Traveling with over $10,000 USD is perfectly legal, but failing to declare it on your customs form is not. If they find it during a search, the money can be seized.

How To Handle A Search Like A Pro

Baggage Lugguge claim airport travelers with suitcase

If the light flashes red, how you behave dictates whether the search takes three minutes or thirty minutes. Follow these strict rules to keep things moving:

1. Stay Calm and Polite The customs agents hold all the cards, and they deal with stressed, cranky tourists all day. Arguing, rolling your eyes, or acting arrogant will only ensure they take their time tearing through every single zipper of your luggage. A polite “buenas tardes” and a cooperative attitude go a remarkably long way.

2. Keep Your Hands Off Your Bags This is the most common rookie mistake. Once you place your suitcase on the metal inspection table, step back. Do not reach into your bag to “help” the agent find something unless they explicitly instruct you to do so. Reaching into a bag during a federal law enforcement inspection is a massive red flag.

3. Be Completely Honest Before they open the bag, the agent will usually ask: “Do you have any cigarettes, alcohol, or food?” Tell the truth immediately. If you have a carton of cigarettes, declare it. If you lie and they find it hidden in your shoes, the fines escalate exponentially because you attempted to deceive a federal officer.

Getting a red light is a minor speed bump, not a vacation ruiner. Pack smart, leave the vapes at home, and if it is your turn for a search, simply smile and let them do their job. You will be out the doors and dodging the timeshare salesmen in no time.

The Red Button was always our family's final hurdle. The kids would decide who was going to push the button. If it was Green they loved it and if it was Red - 15 more minutes in the hot building. They were young when they started going with us. We love Cabo and have had 2 timeshares . I am on my 3rd.
