New Connection Between Cabo And San Jose Will Speed Transfer Times: What Tourists Need To Know

Share The Article

If you have ever booked an airport transfer from SJD all the way down to Cabo San Lucas during rush hour, you know that the “30-minute drive” is often a work of pure fiction.

Right now, getting between the two main cities of Los Cabos relies almost entirely on two main arteries: the scenic (but highly congested) Transpeninsular Highway, or the faster (but limited) inland toll road. When an accident happens or construction flares up, the entire region grinds to a halt.

But relief is finally on the horizon. According to a new report, the municipal government is actively pushing forward with the most expensive, ambitious mobility project in the history of Los Cabos: The Interurban Corridor. If you are planning future trips to Baja, here is what this massive new highway project looks like and how it will fundamentally change the way tourists get around the destination.

The Interurban Corridor: The $6 Billion Peso Fix

The sheer scale of this project is staggering. The Interurban Corridor is designed to be a massive “third lane” connecting San José del Cabo directly with Cabo San Lucas.

  • The Goal: To create a massive pressure-release valve for the existing highways. By giving locals and commercial trucks a third, highly efficient route to travel between the cities, it will strip the heavy traffic off the Transpeninsular Highway (which runs right past the major luxury resorts and beaches).
  • The Cost: Because of the extensive infrastructure, bridges, and paving required to cut a new highway through the desert, the project has an estimated price tag of 6 billion pesos (making it the most expensive mobility project currently on the table).

Where Does The Project Stand Right Now?

Building a new highway from scratch requires slicing through miles of privately owned land. So, when can tourists actually expect to drive on it?

According to Roberto Flores, the Director General of Urban Development, the city is currently in the heavy management phase. “This is a phased process,” Flores explained to the Los Cabos Early Risers Group. “We have to work on preliminary designs, detailed design plans, cost-benefit analyses… Right-of-way issues, getting people to sign agreements so they can donate their land—all of that requires a lot of work.”

The good news? The city is successfully navigating the red tape. Flores confirmed that the proposed route for the intercity corridor crosses through 12 different private landowners. As of this week, the city has successfully secured signatures and land agreements from nine of them, with a tenth expected in the coming days.

AGGRESSIVE UPGRADES
The Message: The local government realizes that forcing millions of tourists to sit in single-lane gridlock is unacceptable for a luxury destination.
The Future: Between this new highway and the rapidly finishing Fonatur Roundabout overpass, future airport transfers will finally be fast, smooth, and completely stress-free.

What This Means For Your Vacation

While you won’t be driving on the Interurban Corridor this year, this project is a massive indicator of where Los Cabos is heading.

The destination is rapidly expanding its luxury footprint, and the local government realizes that forcing millions of tourists to sit in single-lane gridlock is entirely unacceptable. Between this new $6 billion peso highway proposal and the current, rapid construction of the Fonatur Roundabout overpass (which is already 72% complete), Los Cabos is aggressively modernizing its infrastructure.

In the coming years, the drive from the airport to your oceanfront suite will finally match the luxury of the destination itself: fast, smooth, and completely stress-free.
