Tourists looking forward to a big fireworks show during their winter vacation getaway to Los Cabos will have to wait until next year for the big show, and it’s all Norma’s fault.

Impact of Hurricane Norma

The traditional New Year’s fireworks show on El Méndano beach has been canceled this year due to the safety and security of locals and travelers visiting the area for the winter holiday season.

No, there aren’t any threats against Los Cabos that would cause the cancellation. The event is being canceled due to the lingering effects from Hurricane Norma which hit the beach resort destination hard last October.

Hurricane Norma hit Los Cabos hard, especially the area’s beaches. The result of the storm for El Médano beach was much of the sand on the beach was dragged out to the sea, resulting in a much smaller beach than normal.

Hurricane impacting the coast

With less available space on the beach, the organizers of the New Year’s fireworks show in Los Cabos felt like there a lack of safety guarantees for attendees on the beach and the chance of a potential accident was too high, so they decided to cancel the event.

“After the last hurricane we had, the beach was very cut off, we were left with a very small piece of beach,” said Ricardo Araoz, president of the local business group in a report about the cancellation. “We have realized that tourists and nationals always go precisely to the fireworks, this causes the beach to be filled with people, now there would be very little space for people, that on the one hand.”

National Security Issue

However, the lack of sand on El Médano beach was not the entire issue leading to the cancellation of the fireworks. The group was also unable to obtain a permit for the event from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA).

The federal agency instead recommended that the business group move the fireworks further out to sea and away from the hotels in the tourist zone. This idea was dismissed by the organizers of the fireworks event.

According to Araoz, the organization did not have the capability to rent docks and boats to stage the fireworks further offshore to prevent the possibility of an accident or fire involving the hotels in the tourist resort zone.

Looking Towards Next Year

While the cancellation of the fireworks show will be a disappointment to not only travelers to the beach resort destination but also locals and business owners in the El Médano tourist zone, the organizers have their sights set on next year.

Plans are already underway to start working with municipal and federal law enforcement agencies along with the Mexican Federal Secretariat of National Defense and local business owners in advance to find an equitable solution which the lack of caused the cancellation of this year’s event.

They pledge to find a solution with more advanced planning so that the event can be a huge success to ring in the new year in 2025.

Tips For Travelers

Tourists enjoying themselves at Cabo Wabo

The good news is there are still plenty of fun activities happening in Los Cabos to usher in the welcome of 2024. Many of the nightclubs, bars, restaurants, and even resort hotels have their own celebration to ring in the new year.

While the lack of a fireworks show may be disappointing to many, Los Cabos is never at risk of missing a reason for travelers to party and enjoy themselves.

However, travelers are now urged to make their dinner and event celebrations in advance since reservations will now definitely be at a premium to ring in 2024 in the beach resort destination of Los Cabos.
