When it comes to what concerns tourists most about visiting Los Cabos, safety is often the first response.
Despite Los Cabos being one of the safest tourist destinations in Mexico, local authorities are still working to increase their proactive prevention activities to keep visitors safe in the beach resort destination.
Safety For Travelers
According to the United States Department of State, visitors to Baja California Sur should exercise increased caution due to crime issues.
However, there are no government employee restrictions on visiting Baja California Sur, including Los Cabos and La Paz.
While that does provide visitors to Los Cabos with a sense of safety and security, Captain Jesús Antonio Gómez Rodríguez knows that his mission is to continue ensuring the safety of all visitors coming to vacation in Los Cabos.
Increased Police Enforcement
Despite the relatively low risk of visitors from the United States traveling to Los Cabos, the municipal police are taking action to ensure that travelers to the beach resort destination remain safe while enjoying their vacation.
The Preventative Police taskforce of the municipality of Los Cabos is charged with conducting at least 100 proactive police activities each and every month.
During the month of April, they conducted over 150 security activities to protect and serve visitors and the community.
They focused specifically on motorist safety during the month of April, ensuring that vehicles had the proper paperwork to ensure tourist safety and even checking for helmets when tourists were riding motorcycles.
Need For Enforcement
Recent reports from the Los Cabos municipal police indicate that traffic safety is becoming a big issue in Los Cabos, especially along the transpeninsular highway and in the tourist corridor.
Accidents have significantly increased in the past couple of months, and injuries to tourists are on the rise.
Even more troubling is that the level of accident activity in Los Cabos is on the increase even during the relatively slow period after the peak spring travel season.
Local officials are concerned that the issues will not only continue to expand but potentially accelerate during the summer months when tourism activity picks up in Los Cabos before the start of the new school year.
The hope is that by planning future enforcement actions now and making sure tourists are thinking about safety when traveling, that they can avoid the increase in activity that normally occurs during high travel seasons.
Future Enforcement Plans
The municipal police of Los Cabos have a number of different security operations planned to keep tourists safe in the new few months.
Future enforcement issues listed for regular police task force work will include ensuring that the restrictive road travel signs are observed and respected by motorists.
They also plan to watch for accident-causing driving behaviors, especially among drivers taking the transpeninsular highway between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
Recently, the Baja California Sur state government has taken over the enforcement and maintenance of part of the roadway in Los Cabos and will in return lower the speed limit to keep tourists safe on a section known for accidents.
What Tourists Can Expect
Tourists should expect to see more police presence on the roadways of Los Cabos both to enforce the regulations as well as to maintain visibility for safety.
Visitors additionally should not be surprised to see more police protection checkpoints set up along the major tourist corridor roadways checking for paperwork and making sure that safety is taken into effect with taxis and rideshare services.
Travelers should anticipate travel delays due to these safety enforcement actions and make sure to incorporate them into their travel plans, such as transfer to the Los Cabos International Airport when visiting the beach resort destination.
