It’s the peak spring season in Los Cabos, with the airport expecting thousands of passengers every weekend during the lead-up to the Easter holiday, still nearly a month away on April 9.

For Los Cabos businesses and local officials, the race is on to keep the beaches clean for tourists and to maintain the prestigious blue flag recognition that Los Cabos has earned for its coastline cleanliness.

More Visitors, More Trash

However, it’s quite a challenge with the volume of visitor traffic significantly up this year and the waste simply piling up on local beaches and tourist areas.

Manuel Cortés Ávila, the local branch coordinator of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone in Los Cabos, definitely has his work cut out for him.

He is in charge of ensuring that the local beaches and coastline are clean and safe for tourists during the busy spring season.

However, like every expert, he does have a plan in place.

The Man With The Plan

Cortés has put a detailed plan in place to keep the beaches and coastline clean for Los Cabos visitors.

His first work plan is to ensure that the trash receptacles are emptied regularly and unsightly trash is removed from local beaches.

He also is working to educate tourists about trash and the resulting waste that is created on the shoreline from spring season bonfires. In fact, he is asking tourists not to light them this year to avoid the damage and trash they cause on the beaches.

He also is dealing with another type of spring season tourist — jellyfish that have decided to also enjoy some leisure time in the ocean and on the beaches just in time for the peak travel season.

Worst of all, they have selected the most popular beach in Los Cabos, El Médano beach as their preferred destination to call home.

Target – Playa El Cosario

Right now, his area of focus and concern is El Cosario beach, where the garbage collection levels have increased significantly over the last couple of weeks.

This beach, over by the Los Cabos marina, has been very popular with spring season visitors this year.

Compound that with the amount of trash that does not even make it to the trash cans for collection, and there’s a lot of work to be done to make sure each guest to Los Cabos can enjoy a clean beach.

Hazards in the Sand

The trash on the beach also causes another hazard for Los Cabos visitors. Along with being unsightly, it is also a hazard.

Broken glass from bottles causes injuries to beachgoers, especially cuts to feet and legs. Unknowingly, tourists walking on the beach barefoot or even in sandals can easily get cut by a piece of glass in the sand.

Another hazard can come from nails on the beach. The wood often used for bonfires can still have nails in the boards. Once the wood burns away, the nails remain in the sand of the ashes, where they can cause injuries when stepped on.

Discarded food waste can also attract animals to the beaches, such as sea life and even dogs looking for a treat.

It is especially dangerous for sea life, such as sea lions, that can get caught in the trash discarded on beaches.

How Tourists Can Help

Using the old adage “pack in, pack out” would be a big help to keep the beaches in Los Cabos clean for other visitors.

Have a fun day at the beach but carry out the waste from the items enjoyed at the beach.

Tourists can even bring trash back to the resorts and dispose of it there.

Travelers should also avoid using items that can cause injuries if left behind, such as broken glass. Another visitor may accidentally step on broken glass and cut open their foot.

Last, try to pick up discarded food waste and not leave it out for animals. This way, they won’t choke on plastic items or get sick from discarded food.
