Los Cabos Cracks Down On Illegal Vendors In Tourist Areas Ahead Of Spring Break Season

Share The Article

Walking the Cabo San Lucas Marina is a rite of passage for any Baja vacation. It is the buzzing epicenter of the city, lined with luxury yachts, open-air restaurants, and fishing charters. But if you have walked the boardwalk recently, you also know that the constant barrage of sales pitches can get exhausting.

Now, just weeks before the busiest time of the year, local authorities are stepping in to clean up the boardwalk.

According to a new report, business leaders and municipal authorities have launched a joint strategy to aggressively crack down on informal, unlicensed vendors and regain “control” of the marina. Here is what is happening and why your next walk to dinner is about to get a lot more relaxing.

The Ultimate Guide To Navigating Vendors In Los Cabos & The Secrets Travelers Need To Know 1

Quick Facts

  • The Issue: An overpopulation of unlicensed vendors have set up illegal, semi-permanent stalls along the federal marina property.
  • The Action: Authorities are deploying extra fiscal inspectors to clear the boardwalk and Medano Beach.
  • The Tourist Impact: A much cleaner, more relaxed walk from your resort to your boat charter with significantly less haggling.

Regaining Control Of The Boardwalk

The push to clean up the marina is being spearheaded by the Los Cabos Coordinating Council (CCC) and the National Port System Administration (Asipona).

During a recent inspection of the high-traffic tourist zones, authorities discovered an alarming level of informal commerce. Julio Castillo Gómez, president of the CCC, noted that they counted at least 20 semi-permanent stalls operating directly on the marina walkways without any legal permits or contracts.

Because the marina is a federal security facility and one of the three most visited spots in all of Los Cabos, allowing unregulated vendors to take over the space creates both a logistical bottleneck and a security blind spot. Asipona has confirmed that because these stalls lack the proper legal contracts, they are moving to have them permanently removed.

The Urgency: The Historic Spring Break Surge

Why is the city rushing to clear the boardwalk right now? It all comes down to the numbers.

As we reported earlier this week, Los Cabos is bracing for a historic Spring Break season. Because of recent security concerns on the Mexican mainland, major youth travel operators canceled events in places like Puerto Vallarta and rerouted those trips directly to Baja.

Los Cabos is now expecting an additional 20,000 spring breakers next month, pushing the total expected crowd to a staggering 70,000 visitors.

With that volume of foot traffic about to hit downtown Cabo San Lucas, clearing the walkways is a matter of public safety. The CCC has urgently requested that the city deploy 12 dedicated fiscal inspectors to heavily patrol both the Marina and Medano Beach to prevent new vendors from setting up shop during the peak weeks.

What This Means For Your Vacation

For the average traveler, this crackdown is a massive win.

The marina is supposed to be a scenic, luxurious walkway, not a high-pressure flea market. By removing these unlicensed, semi-permanent stalls, the city is freeing up physical space on the crowded boardwalks.

More importantly, it drastically reduces the “harassment” factor. When you are walking back to your resort after a sunset cruise, you shouldn’t have to navigate a maze of aggressive vendors selling counterfeit silver or unregulated tours.
