Why Medano Beach Feels Like 2 Totally Different Beaches Depending Where You Sit (Map Included)

Share The Article

When friends ask me if they should stay on Medano Beach, I always answer with a question: “Which part?”

If you have never been to Cabo San Lucas, you probably have a very specific image of Playa El Médano in your head. You picture loud bass thumping from beach clubs, tequila shots, massive crowds, and a parade of vendors trying to sell you silver necklaces.

And you aren’t wrong—that is Medano Beach. But it is only half of it.

The biggest mistake I see first-time visitors make is assuming the entire two-mile stretch of swimmable sand shares the exact same personality. The reality is that Medano Beach suffers from a massive split personality.

Depending on where you drop your towel, you are either in the middle of a high-octane spring break movie, or a quiet, luxurious family retreat.

If you are trying to figure out where to book your hotel or rent a beach chair for the afternoon, here is the breakdown of the two totally different beaches sharing one name.

Mini Vibe Check

  • The Split: High-energy party (West) vs. Quiet luxury resort living (East).
  • The Walk: It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to walk from the loudest point to the quietest point.
  • The Water: The ocean is safely swimmable across both zones, but the boat traffic drops significantly the further east you go.

Zone 1: The “Spring Break” Strip (The Marina End)

If you start at the far southwest end of the beach, right near the entrance to the Cabo San Lucas Marina, you are in the belly of the beast.

  • The Vibe: This is the Medano you see on MTV. It is electric, chaotic, and incredibly fun if you are in the right mood.
  • The Landmarks: This zone is anchored by iconic, high-volume beach clubs like Mango Deck (famous for drinking games and loud MCs), The Office on the Beach, and trendy spots like SUR Beach House and Corazón.
  • The Reality: The vendor density here is intense. You will be asked if you want to buy a blanket every three minutes. The water is packed with jet skis, glass-bottom boats, and water taxis revving their engines. I love coming to this zone for a couple of hours to soak up the energy and eat Baja fish tacos, but I rarely last a full day here. It is sensory overload.

Zone 2: The “Resort Row” Sanctuary (The East End)

If you start walking northeast away from the marina, you will eventually cross an invisible line. The thumping bass fades away, the density of umbrellas thins out, and the beach physically widens. You have entered the Sanctuary.

  • The Vibe: This is where you go to actually read a book, take a nap, and let your kids play in the sand without worrying about them getting run over by a rogue bachelor party.
  • The Landmarks: This zone is dominated by larger, family-friendly and luxury resorts like Villa del Palmar, Villa La Estancia, 1 Homes Preview, and the massive Riu Palace.
  • The Reality: The vendors are still here, but because the hotels have deeper, roped-off private beach areas, they can’t physically approach your lounge chair. The water traffic is minimal, making it far more relaxing for a casual swim. When I want a true “beach day” to just decompress, this is the side of Medano I retreat to.

The Bottom Line

Medano is the best swimming beach in Cabo San Lucas, but you have to pick your zone based on your mood. Don’t book a quiet romantic getaway next to Mango Deck, and don’t book a rowdy group trip out by the Riu hoping to be in the center of the action.

Understand the map, pick your personality, and you will have a flawless beach day.
