It is no secret that Mexico is a popular vacation destination for foreign tourists, but it is super popular among Americans. In fact, one in four Americans who travel abroad choose one of the many popular vacation destinations in Mexico.  And out of all of the places that American travelers can go, Los Cabos continues to be a top international destination for American travelers.

Los Cabos Tourism

More than 4 million tourists visited Los Cabos in 2022, which represents 20 percent more than the prior year.  Just between October 2022 and March 2023, a total of 1.3 million airline seats had already been booked by mid-November for tourists coming from U.S. cities.  This is over 35 percent more than the number of tickets that were booked for the same time period in 2019 and 2020.

Why Los Cabos Is So Popular Among Americans

Los Cabos obviously isn’t just popular among Americans but for travelers from all over the world that seek out a warm sunny destination to vacation in.  However, travelers from the U.S. have a few unique advantages that make the vacation destination even more attractive.  Most of these advantages come in the form of easier access to Los Cabos due to the close proximity of the Baja peninsula to the United States.

Location Of Los Cabos

Los Cabos, which translates to “The Capes” and includes San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, is part of the state of Baja California Sur, which is located on the Baja peninsula.  The peninsula is connected to the state of California in the U.S., so the proximity couldn’t get any closer.  And although it is not advised to make the journey by car, the closeness of the region to American soil still has its advantages, which will be highlighted below.

Growing Accessibility

Americans can currently fly direct to San Jose del Cabo International Airport from 26 different airports in the U.S.  This is six more options compared to what was available in October 2022, which is more than a 25 percent increase in just a few months.  While some flights may be added specifically for a particular season, the increase is still evidence that the popularity of Los Cabos is growing, and with it, so is accessibility.

Affordable Flights

Flights to Los Cabos from some U.S. cities are pretty affordable, too, likely also due to the close proximity, but also the increasing demand.  In some cities, like NY and Denver, roundtrip tickets for direct flights can be found for less than $200.  This, of course, depends on a few factors, like how far out you book and what day the flight is on.

Short Travel Times

Flights to San Jose del Cabos from some cities in the lower western and southern portions of the United States can be under three hours in length.  Even for those on the east coast, flights don’t go much over five hours long, making it possible to get to Los Cabos and still enjoy a good part of the day if the flight lands early.  The shorter travel times mean that Los Cabos is a fantastic place to visit for a quick weekend getaway, but it still has plenty to do for a longer vacation too.

Los Cabos is so popular because it has breathtaking scenery, stunning beaches, and some of the best all-inclusive luxury resorts in Mexico.  It has everything American travelers are looking for in a beach destination and more.  This is why so many choose Los Cabos as their beach vacation destination and why tourism in Cabo will continue to grow.
