The ocean might look picture-perfect right now in Los Cabos—endless blue, glittering waves, and skies so clear it feels like a dream.
But for travelers heading to the beach this week, there’s an important detail you’ll want to know before diving in: those beautiful waves are a lot more powerful than they seem.
As much as we love a good beach day here at The Cabo Sun, safety comes first. And right now, tourists are being urged to be extra cautious when heading to the shore.

Why the Waves Are Wilder Than Usual
Right now, Mother Nature is putting on quite a show in Los Cabos. A massive swell rolling up from the south is combining forces with distant Hurricane Barbara, and the result? Some seriously dramatic surf.
The swell is expected to peak around Monday, June 16, with waves possibly reaching up to nine feet. That’s great news if you’re a surfer—but if you’re looking to wade into the water, it’s time to think twice.
Even though Hurricane Barbara isn’t heading for landfall here, it’s still sending energy toward our coastlines. That’s enough to create strong currents and surprise waves, even under clear skies. It’s a reminder that when it comes to the ocean, what you see isn’t always what you get.
These wave patterns are being tracked by experts including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and local officials are already putting extra beach safety measures in place.

Not All Beaches Are Created Equal
Los Cabos is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Mexico, but not all of them are safe for swimming—especially when the surf is up. Even on calm days, beaches like Divorce Beach, Solmar, and Las Viudas can be treacherous, with powerful undertows and steep shore breaks.
During high surf events, even typically swimmable beaches like Medano can become dangerous. Local lifeguards and the federal beach authority (ZOFEMAT) are keeping a close watch and updating beach flag warnings regularly.
If you’re not familiar with the flag system, here’s a quick refresher:
- Green: Safe to swim
- Yellow: Use caution
- Red: Dangerous conditions, stay out of the water
- Black: Beach closed entirely
Remember, a beach without a flag doesn’t mean it’s safe—it might mean no one has assessed it yet that day.

Stay Safe While Still Enjoying Cabo
Yes, the surf is up. But that doesn’t mean your Cabo beach dreams are over. You can still have a great time—you just need to tweak your plans a little.
If you want to stay close to the ocean, grab a seat at a beachside bar or restaurant and enjoy the view with a cocktail in hand. The waves right now are spectacular to watch from the shore. Spots like Mango Deck or The Office on Medano Beach are perfect for this.
If you’re craving a swim, head to your resort pool or a swimmable cove where conditions are being closely monitored.
And if you’re ready to switch things up entirely, this is a great time to explore inland. Think desert ATV tours, art walks in San José del Cabo, or a food tour through local taquerias. There’s no shortage of ways to enjoy Los Cabos without getting wet.

Why It Matters More Than Ever
Earlier this week, a tourist was swept out to sea by a rip current and had to be rescued by local lifeguards, which we covered here. Thankfully, she made it out okay, but it’s a reminder of how quickly things can change at the shoreline.
The ocean is a powerful force, and even if you’re a strong swimmer, the currents and waves in Cabo can surprise you.
Add in the extra intensity from swells and hurricanes off the coast, and it’s not the time to take risks.

Cabo Sun Stays on the Watch
We’re tracking beach conditions and weather updates daily here at The Cabo Sun, and we’ll always keep you in the know. Our earlier report on Hurricane Barbara breaks down what you can expect in the days ahead, especially if you have water activities planned.
For now, our best advice? Respect the flags, trust the lifeguards, and when in doubt, stay out of the surf. Cabo is still an incredible place to vacation, and there’s more than enough to explore, taste, and enjoy—even with your feet dry.
Stay safe and stay sunny!
