The peak tourist season is right around the corner in Los Cabos, and local resorts and hotels are projecting strong occupancy of at least 80 percent.
While that sounds like great news for the beach resort community, the truth is there is a lot of concern among resort and hotel properties in Los Cabos.
No, they aren’t worried about the number of visitors coming to town or the current average nightly room rate. Instead, they are concerned about having enough workers to provide excellent service to Los Cabos guests.
Lack of Hotel Workers
Los Cabos resorts and hotels are struggling to find enough workers to provide the high-quality service levels demanded by the new trend in luxury travelers.
In fact, some Los Cabos resort and hotel operators mentioned that they are often faced with operating their properties for tourists with up to 20 percent unfilled staff positions.
According to the President of the Los Cabos Association of Human Resources Executives, Luis Antonio Olachea, there are more than 1,200 unfilled positions in Los Cabos among their 70 member properties.
The members of the organization include the principal resorts, hotels, restaurants, and golf courses catering to guests at the beach resort destination.
Guest Service Roles in High Demand
Taking a look at the roles open at many of the different travel and tourism providers in Los Cabos shows a disheartening trend for travelers to the area.
The most common open positions are front-line positions designed to serve the needs of travelers to Los Cabos – guest service, customer service, and food and beverage-related roles.
For example, many tourism-focused businesses in Los Cabos are in need of housekeepers, waiters, cooks, and even culinary teams.
While those may seem very basic entry-level positions, the truth is they are not.
To serve the luxury traveler coming to Los Cabos, these positions require specialty skills and some prior experience.
Resorts Outreach to Fill Positions
The local resorts and hotels are working with locals to provide the training needed to meet the strict quality levels of customer service demanded by guests in Los Cabos.
They have even tried to network with other nearby areas in Mexico to recruit people to move to Los Cabos for better pay and working conditions.
Recently, they have launched initiatives across Mexico to recruit graduates directly from colleges and universities to jump-start their well-paying careers in the hospitality and food service industry in Los Cabos.
However, despite all of their efforts and enticement of workers, the positions still remain unfilled for the resorts, hotels, restaurants, and golf courses in the beach resort destination.
What Tourists Need to Know
The local resorts, hotels, restaurants and golf courses are working hard to have plans in place for the peak travel season to make sure that guests to the beach resort vacation destination are not impacted by the lack of workers.
However, it will be a challenge for the guest amenities that are facing up to 20 percent less staffing than needed to serve travelers.
Compounding the issue is the shift in traveler base to Los Cabos from a more casual leisure customer to more of an upscale luxury traveler.
The upscale luxury visitor to Los Cabos demands even higher levels of service based on their prior experiences in the travel and tourism industry.
The resorts that meet the basic needs of tourists will be even more pressured to provide the higher level of guest service demanded by the luxury travel segment.
It will only take one bad experience to ruin an entire vacation getaway for the more preferred segment of visitors.
With the peak season quickly approaching, the backup plans of local Los Cabos tourism businesses will soon be tested. Let’s hope they can hit the mark.
