Despite the bumper-to-bumper drama you may have seen on social media, the massive overpass now rising at San José del Cabo’s famous Fonatur roundabout hasn’t actually slowed a single departure or arrival at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD).
Airport chief Francisco Villaseñor says on-time performance remains “normal,” and internal surveys show zero missed flights so far. Still, the earthmovers are real, the cones are multiplying, and peak-hour backups can be intimidating.
Below, we at The Cabo Sun break down why flights are safe, when traffic really snarls, and how to sail through the construction zone like a local.

What’s Being Built & Why It Matters
The Fonatur project is a 1.5-kilometer sunken roadway that will funnel four travel lanes under the existing traffic circle, eliminating the stop-and-go pinch-point that chokes Highway 1 every winter high season.
Backed by 480 million pesos in federal and municipal funding, the job is scheduled to finish around mid-2026 after roughly 14 months of nonstop day-and-night work.
Crews are also adding new sidewalks, protected bike lanes, and smart traffic lights—part of a broader push to modernize the resort corridor’s only east-west artery.

Airport Reality Check: No Delays, No Complaints
Villaseñor’s operations team actively tracks those peak windows and pushes shuttle companies onto alternate routes—especially the toll bypass (libramiento) that skirts the construction altogether.
The strategy is working: business-aviation handlers monitoring VIP ground transfers say door-to-door times remain “normal” outside the heaviest rush, and even then rarely top 60 minutes.
Internal airport data show zero recorded passenger complaints or missed flights tied to roadwork as of August 6.

Detours & Quick Fixes Keeping Traffic Moving
- Arroyo Costa Azul detours (4 unpaved spurs). Opened in June to protect airport traffic during lane closures.
- “Behind-Chedraui” bypass. A brand-new paved shortcut opening this month to siphon cars away from the roundabout.
- Toll-road libramiento. Adds roughly US $2 but dodges 100 percent of the congestion; most transfers from Cabo San Lucas already use it.
- Future Interurban Axis. A separate inland connector just approved that will give shuttles a third option once built.

Pro Tips to Breeze Through the Bottleneck
- Book flights outside rush hour. Mid-day arrivals (11 a.m.–2 p.m.) and late-night departures (after 9 p.m.) sail through almost traffic-free.
- Pad your schedule—just in case. Add 30 extra minutes to your normal transfer time until the overpass opens.
- Request the toll road in advance. Not every taxi takes it automatically; ask your driver or shuttle rep to “usar el libramiento.”
- Use live-traffic apps. Both Waze and Google Maps now show temporary detours so you can eyeball your ETA before checkout.
- Stay hydrated & chill. Airport lounges recently expanded seating and AC upgrades (part of SJD’s ongoing gate expansion plan).
The Road Ahead—Literally
Once the underpass is finished, officials expect through-traffic times between SJD and the hotel zone to drop by up to 30 percent and eliminate the last major bottleneck on Highway 1.
The project also dovetails with the future Interurban Axis, promising a long-sought inland shortcut between Cabo San Lucas and San José.

Will Work Finish On Time?
The contractor is running two shifts and claims to be ahead of schedule, but the rainy season and a few unexpected lane closures have already shown how fragile the traffic plan can be.
Local engineers still insist June 2026 is a firm delivery date.
Bottom Line
Airport transfers are safe, punctual, and mostly drama-free—even with the Fonatur roundabout looking like a lunar excavation site. Keep an eye on rush-hour windows, hop on the toll road when in doubt, and rest easy knowing your beach time (and your flight) won’t be derailed by the diggers. We’ll keep you posted every step of the way—because that’s what we do here at The Cabo Sun.
