Is Los Cabos Becoming the New Cancun? The Surprising Answer is No — And That’s a Good Thing

Ask anyone to picture a classic Mexican beach vacation, and their mind likely conjures up a specific image: endless stretches of white sand, turquoise water, and a sprawling all-inclusive resort. For decades, that postcard has been stamped with one name: Cancun. But a seismic shift is underway in the world of Mexican tourism. A different kind of traveler is now pointing their compass west, toward the sun-drenched tip of the Baja Peninsula.

Is Los Cabos Becoming the New Cancun? The Surprising Answer is No — And That’s a Good Thing

So, is Los Cabos stealing Cancun’s crown? Here at The Cabo Sun, we can tell you the surprising answer is a definitive no—and that’s precisely why it’s winning. Los Cabos isn’t playing the same game; it’s building a different, more exclusive kingdom.

Think of it this way: Cancun is the world’s most popular concert t-shirt—ubiquitous, fun, and worn by millions. Los Cabos is the custom-tailored suit—less common, built with precision, and designed for a different kind of occasion. The numbers tell the story. Cancun’s airport is a bustling super-hub, welcoming a staggering volume of over 30 million passengers a year. Los Cabos, while booming, sees only a fraction of that traffic.

But here’s the secret: the average traveler to Los Cabos spends significantly more per day. With average nightly hotel rates consistently soaring past the $500 mark—more than double that of Cancun in many reports—it’s clear that Cabo is competing for a different customer, one focused on a premium experience over an all-you-can-eat bargain.

There’s another, billion-dollar reason for this shift that you can see—and sometimes smell—from the shore. It’s the “brown monster” in the room: sargassum. The massive seaweed blooms that plague the Caribbean have become a persistent, costly headache for Cancun. While the government and hotels spend millions on cleanup, the reality of brown, pungent tides can spoil the turquoise dream. Los Cabos, thanks to its prime location on the Pacific Ocean, is geographically immune. It simply doesn’t get sargassum, giving it a massive and permanent natural advantage for travelers who demand pristine beaches.

This difference is fueling a five-star “arms race” in the desert. The world’s most exclusive hotel brands are placing massive bets on Los Cabos. While Cancun expands its successful all-inclusive model, Cabo is welcoming a jaw-dropping lineup of ultra-luxury resorts. Brands like Park Hyatt, St. Regis, and the ultra-exclusive Amanvari are all opening their doors, building a landscape of barefoot luxury, world-class golf, and high-end adventure.

Ultimately, the choice is becoming clearer. Cancun remains the undefeated champion of the fun-filled, accessible beach party. It’s a vacation that’s easy, energetic, and serves the masses brilliantly. Los Cabos, however, has positioned itself as the exclusive VIP after-party—a destination built on a foundation of luxury, unique experiences, and a rugged landscape that promises a different kind of escape. It isn’t becoming the new Cancun; it’s solidifying its status as the unapologetic anti-Cancun, and for a growing number of travelers, that’s exactly what they’re looking for.

See you at the VIP after party😉.

We visited Cabo for the first time in January and are now receiving the Cabo Sun. In the past we have mainly gone to PV - Nuevo Vallarta & Bucerias and occasionally to Cancun. We stayed at the RIU Palace and had mixed feelings about our stay in Cabo. A major consideration for us is that the area around the RIU complex and into town wasn't the nicest to be around. Some efforts are being made to upgrade things in this area but more is needed. Just to let you know. TimmyP
