How Los Cabos Resorts Are Preparing To Keep Tourists Safe This Hurricane Season

The Mexican Pacific is bracing for an active rainy season, with the National Water Commission forecasting between 18 and 21 tropical cyclones this year.

While those numbers might sound intimidating if you are planning a late summer or fall getaway, the local hospitality industry is already several steps ahead.

Los Cabos is home to more than 170 hotels and over 21,000 rooms. To protect this massive infrastructure and the thousands of guests inside, the Los Cabos Hotel Association has officially begun activating its comprehensive safety protocols.

If you are traveling to the region during hurricane season, here is a look at exactly how local resorts are coordinating with government authorities to ensure your safety.

Activating the Master Contingency Plan

Lilzi Orcí, the Executive President of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, confirmed that the organization is actively updating its real-time contingency data. This involves auditing partner hotels across the municipality to assess their current readiness well before severe weather threatens the coast.

The association is strictly tracking:

  • Operational Strength: Evaluating the current staffing, resources, and structural readiness of each individual property.
  • Alternative Communication: Ensuring hotels have verified backup communication systems in place if standard cellular or Wi-Fi networks go down during a severe storm.

Securing Certified Temporary Shelters

A major focus of the preparation is securing highly engineered on-site safe zones.

The Hotel Association is carefully auditing which resorts currently hold official government certifications for “temporary shelters.”

They are mapping out exactly how many people each shelter can safely hold and classifying the category of protection they offer.

This level of preparation ensures that, in the event of a hurricane, guests can shelter in place safely within their resort without needing to evacuate into unfamiliar parts of the city.

High-Level Coordination with Civil Protection

Resort managers are not designing these safety plans in a vacuum. The Hotel Association serves as a direct bridge between hotel security chiefs and government emergency specialists.

The hospitality sector is currently organizing high-level briefings with both the State Undersecretary of Civil Protection and the Municipal Director of Civil Protection.

These meetings are designed to brief hotel security teams on the latest meteorological predictions for the season and to strictly align the hotels’ internal lockdown protocols with the government’s broader emergency response strategies.
