The founder of the world-famous Zona Maco art festival in Mexico City has a new project in her mind.
Best of all, she has Baja California Sur as the destination for the festival running through April 23.
In The Footsteps of Zona Maco
Artist Zélika García has teamed up with her son Kareem Reza to bring the new Art Baja California, or ABC for short, arts festival to La Paz and Los Cabos before making its way to Todos Santos.
The Zona Maco event concept, which ABC will be patterned after, was born out of the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The organizers were not able to host an art show in a convention facility in Mexico City, so they decided to take the show to the artists themselves instead.
This created a route tour where patrons of the arts could visit and view the artists work in the natural environment, barrio by barrio. About 100 different studios and galleries around Mexico City participated in the event.
The idea went viral, no pun intended, and Zona Maco quickly became one of the best known art exhibitions in a socially distance pandemic world.
The ABC of Baja California
The concept has evolved into an art road tour of sort for the Art Baja California version. There is a central hub in Todos Santos, but the art galleries and studios participating will be dispersed to include Los Cabos and La Paz.
The idea is that each segment of the event will be able to capture the local flair of the host community and showcase the local artists that call it home.

It will also provide tourists an opportunity to learn about the three communities through their local art and culture.
It’s a concept they call “Lo Local” where the entire town can participate. Local galleries, studios and businesses simply need to open their doors and share their art with visitors and locals.
While the plans are to leverage the international tourism at La Paz, Los Cabos and Todos Santos to increase participation, the organizers also stressed the importance of being part of the community with support from local artists and organizations.
How Tourists Can Participate
With the Art Baja California activity starting to wind down in La Paz, the action shifts to Los Cabos and Todos Santos.
There are a number of events taking place in Los Cabos over the next couple of weeks, especially at the Hotel El Ganzo and Casa Musa.
For example, several live music events and even a Flamenco night is on the agenda for Hotel El Ganzo.
Meanwhile Casa Musa is hosting a series of hands-on manual workshops (cyanotype, embroidery, painting, leather crafts and ceramics). Los Cabos tourists are welcome to sign up and participate in the arts learning lessons.
Several of the events are free, and some do require prior reservations. Tourists in Los Cabos and Todos Santos should be sure to review the event calendar and plan their events in advance.
One of the highlights of the event is “El Patio” in Todos Santos where the art goes outdoors in the natural settings of Baja California Sur. This special exhibition has a number of interesting art creations on display and artisans to meet.
Tickets for El Patio are also available on the Art Baja California website along with more details about the entire regional exhibition.
Art Baja California is currently running and will conclude in Todos Santos on April 23.
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the inaugural Zona Maco event in Mexico City. The plans are to continue that event, and this new one in Baja California Sur, for more than 20 years to come.
