There is a vibrant art community in San Jose del Cabo, with multiple galleries spread out throughout the city’s Gallery District.  In addition, there is an Art Walk event held on Thursdays between the months of November and June every week from 5-9 pm.

Now, in an upcoming event, the artistic vibe of San Jose del Cabo will be on full display as the community prepares for a new month-and-a-half-long Los Cabos festival that is set to begin in March.

The Festival

The ABC Art San Jose festival will be part of a larger festival called the ABC Art Baja California festival, which includes events in La Paz and Todos Santos as well as San Jose del Cabo.

A part of the festival, called “Lo Local,” will focus on projects and spaces in each of the local communities.  Establishments that can participate in the festival include restaurants, bars, hotels, music venues, art galleries, and artists’ studios.

San Jose Del Cabo

San Jose del Cabo is the quieter, more authentic of The Capes, or Los Cabos, which includes San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.  Here you’ll find authentic Mexican restaurants and local bars alongside the many art galleries and the historic Old Town.  It’s common to see tourists and locals alike gathered in the vibrant Plaza Mijares, where events, including the Art Walk, are often held.

Todos Santos

Todos Santos is a coastal town on the Pacific side of Baja California that is located a little over an hour away from San Jose del Cabo and is also popular among artists, and is home to many art galleries.  It has been designated as one of Mexico’s Magic Towns due to its historical and cultural significance.  The town is characterized by beautiful colonial streets and architecture, as well as a bustling historic district with restaurants, bars, shops, and art galleries.

La Paz

La Paz sits about 2.5 hours northeast of San Jose del Cabo alongside the Sea of Cortez.  It, too, is known for its vibrant art community that showcases both international and Mexican artists.  Throughout the city, you’ll find urban art and murals, statues and sculptures, and art museums and galleries, including along El Malecón, a waterfront boardwalk popular among tourists and locals alike.

Art In Baja California

Many artists are drawn to these Baja California towns not only because vibrant art communities already exist but also because they are an escape from busier cities with art communities.  In addition, many artists are drawn to the desert landscape, which makes for beautiful artistic material.  It is the hope that the ABC Art Baja California festival will also draw tourists and locals to these vibrant art communities, further developing and promoting them.

Artists, establishments, and others still have time to submit applications to participate in the upcoming festival until February 25th.  After that date, there should be more information on the events that will be held in San José del Cabo, La Paz, and Todos Santos during the month-and-a-half-long event.  Until then, visitors still have plenty of opportunities to explore art in these vibrant art communities.
