Strong travel demand for vacations in Los Cabos continues to fill hotel rooms through the busy spring season. The current expectations are already leading to an anticipated 80% resort occupancy rate or more in April for Los Cabos.
However, according to the Undersecretary of Tourism Fernando Ojeda Aguilar, resort room reservations are being placed later in the travel planning process and not as far in advance as was the case in the past.
Last Minute Resort Booking
Traditionally, rooms have been booked well in advance of traveling, and occupancy rates have hovered 70 percent or more, well above the national average for Mexico.
Travelers to Los Cabos have now been waiting a bit to make their final reservations, including rooms, compared with the activity from prior years.
What could be impacting tourism is the inflation rates and economic uncertainty in the United States. Also, the anticipation of last-minute deals may also have travelers waiting before deciding to make their room reservations.
Recently, Delta Airlines announced that they had upgraded their website to highlight special last-minute travel deals to Los Cabos specifically.
However, travelers may actually come out ahead by reserving their rooms at lower daily rates more in advance and taking advantage of travel insurance policies instead, which could cover the economic impacts of vacation travel.

Few April Showers in Los Cabos
Despite the last minute-ness of the travelers, tourism officials and resort properties are still excited about welcoming tourists to Los Cabos for the busy spring season. There are a number of activities planned and plenty of leisure time available for fun in the sun.
April is a fantastic time to visit Los Cabos, with a still temperate daytime average high of 87 degrees and an average low of only 67 degrees. While there typically is cloud cover for several days in Los Cabos during April, little to no rain is typically expected.
Even during cloudy days, beaches at Los Cabos are still comfortable for lounging. Additionally, staying inside on a gray day can be an alternative because there are plenty of resort rooms that have the same feeling as spending the day at the spa.
Another benefit of choosing to visit Los Cabos in April is that it is also after the popular Spring Break period. It is a more relaxed season before the tourist rush to Los Cabos once schools in the United States get out for the summer in May, and the heat really comes in June.
April is also the time for some great Striped Marlin sportfishing in Los Cabos. It is also traditionally the best season for Swordfish, Yellowfin Tuna, Red Snapper, and Grouper.
For those seeking to see the gray whales migrating 10,000-12,000 miles off the coast of Baja, California, April is also typically the tail end (no pun intended) of the popular Los Cabos tourist whale watching season.
What The Future Holds
As flights to Los Cabos increase and new destinations in the United States come on board, more visitors are actually expected to fill the resort rooms in Los Cabos earlier, Aguilar added.
Back in December, the Los Cabos Airport projected that 2023 would be a record-breaking year for tourists. Nearly eight million passengers were expected to travel through the airport this year, which would be a 10 percent increase in passenger traffic over 2022. Last year was also a record-breaking year for airport travelers in Los Cabos.
Work is underway on a nine-gate expansion of Terminal 2, and a brand new Terminal 3 should debut for Los Cabos travelers sometime in 2024. The entire project to accommodate additional flights and more Los Cabos visitors is expected to cost more than $13 million.
Aguilar also mentioned that Los Cabos is ready to provide the necessary level of superior service and tourist security needed for the upcoming busy spring travel season and for many years to come.
