Tourist Warning: All Los Cabos Beaches Are Currently Off Limits Due To Dangerous Conditions

Los Cabos has been pretty lucky as far as hurricane season goes this year, with no major storms making landfall as of yet.   

The destination and the tourists visiting are feeling some of the effects of Tropical Storm Ileana, though. The storm recently blew through the region, leaving stormy weather in its wake.   

This has led to a warning for tourists that all Los Cabos beaches are currently off-limits due to dangerous conditions.   

Black Warning Flags On All Los Cabos Beaches 

If you’ve ever been to Los Cabos then you probably already know about the beach warning flags used to inform beachgoers of current conditions.   

You probably also know that the last thing you want to see on the beach is the black warning flag because it means that the beach is closed due to dangerous conditions.   

Currently, there are black flags on all Los Cabos beaches.   

Other Flags That Warn Of Dangerous Beach Conditions 

There are two other flags that also warn of dangerous conditions.   

The yellow flag is used to warn beachgoers that increased caution should be exercised when swimming.   

The red flag warns beachgoers that the water is not safe for swimming.   

The difference between the red and the black is that the black flag means that the beach is completely closed, while the red just means that swimming is prohibited.   

Tropical Storm Ileana  

The reason for the black flags being posted on all Los Cabos beaches right now is the recent passing of Tropical Storm Ileana.   

The storm formed on Thursday and by Friday afternoon was just 35 miles east-northeast of the city of Cabo San Lucas, which sits at the very tip of the Baja Peninsula.   

Los Cabos was issued a Tropical Storm Warning as the storm approached.   

Effects Of The Tropical Storm On Los Cabos  

Los Cabos experienced consistent rain from Thursday night on, which led to some flooding in the area.   

Wind and rain from the storm’s passing also produced choppy waves, which have created dangerous conditions at the area’s beaches.   

Although officials did not shut down the airport but rather left the decision to fly up to the airlines, several flights were canceled.  

The Last Hurricane To Affect Los Cabos 

The last hurricane to affect Los Cabos was in 2023.   

Hurricane Norma made a near-direct hit in Los Cabos in October of last year as a Category 1 storm.   

Despite the very close call, very minimal damage was reported, but stores, beaches, and the marina were closed.  

Hurricane Season In Los Cabos 

This may be the only storm to have affected Los Cabos so far this year, but hurricane season isn’t over yet.   

It starts in mid-May and lasts until the end of November, and right now is about when the season typically starts to ramp up.   

That said, Los Cabos has not been directly hit by a major hurricane since Hurricane Odile in 2014, which was a Category 3 storm that caused severe damage. 

What To Do If You’re In Los Cabos When A Hurricane Hits 

It can be a little intimidating if you have never lived in an area where hurricanes happen.   

Most of us will never forget watching the images of major storms in America, but it’s hard to understand unless you’ve experienced them yourself.   

Fortunately, devastating storms are not the norm, especially in Los Cabos.
