Los Cabos, made up of the two super popular destinations of Cabo San Lucas and San ][oose del Cabo, is the most popular vacation destination in the area. It is located at the tip of the Baja California Peninsula.
No matter what time of year you visit Los Cabos, even though there are slower seasons, there will be crowds of tourists at the beaches and resorts.
If you want to visit this beautiful region of Mexico but escape those crowds, check out five reasons why the lesser-known town of La Ribera, north of Los Cabos, is trending right now and is the perfect alternative.
La Ribera
La Ribera is located less than an hour from Los Cabos International Airport in San Jose del Cabo.
The town is home to just 2,000 people, approximately, but has a lot to offer.
One of the things the destination is known for is its fishing, which both locals are dedicated to, and tourists come from all over for.
Activities
One of the best reasons to visit La Ribera is the abundance of activities there.
In addition to being a great place for sport fishing, with several different species of fish and other marine life plentiful in the waters, it’s also a great place for snorkeling and dining as well.
Additionally, the calm waters are ideal for activities like kayaking and paddleboarding as well.
Events
Even though La Ribera is a really small town by any standards, several events take place in the town that visitors come from all over to attend.
One of these is an annual fishing tournament, the La Ribera Fishing Tournament.
The town is also known for off-road racing, and an annual racing tournament is held in August.
Nature
La Ribera is surrounded by stunning nature.
Just steps away is the world-renowned Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is filled with hundreds of species of flora and fauna.
Additionally, it’s only a short drive from La Ribera to the Sierra de la Laguna mountains, where you’ll find trails, hot springs, and a waterfall to explore.
Beaches
In addition to all of the other nature to explore in and around La Ribera, there are plenty of beautiful beaches to visit.
The area’s beaches are known for their calm waters and soft white sand, making them perfect for relaxing and unwinding for the day.
Specifically, Playa La Ribera is an amazing, secluded beach with lots of space to spread out.
There are free palapas to use, but you’ll have to pack a picnic because there are no stores or restaurants along the beach, which adds to its peaceful charm.
Authenticity
Finally, another great thing about visiting La Ribera is its more old-world Mexican authenticity.
It’s far removed from the glitz and glamor of Cabo San Lucas, with friendly locals who have lived in the area for generations and family-owned restaurants and shops.
This makes La Ribera a much better place to experience authentic Mexican culture.
Where To Stay In La Ribera
As small as La Ribera is, you can still enjoy luxurious accommodations in the destination.
There are several Airbnbs and a few villa rentals, but even better, is the Four Seasons at the Costa Palmas resort community.
There is also an Aman hotel in the works as well.
The sprawling 1500-acre resort community has everything you need for a luxurious Los Cabos vacation, yet it’s far removed from all of the crowds the more popular destination is known for.
