The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico just released an advisory addressed to all American citizens heading to Mexico for the upcoming spring.
The document advises everyone to remain alert at all times while providing tips on what to do in case of emergencies.
But do these recommendations apply to all areas of Mexico, or are places such as Los Cabos safe for tourists?
The advisory
Let’s start by analyzing the recommendations issued by the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico.
First of all, authorities claim that: “Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including in popular tourist destinations.” The document also recommends ‘extreme caution’ in downtown areas of popular spring break locations, such as Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum.
In this regard, it’s important to notice how the official advisory does not mention Los Cabos among the areas to watch out for, a positive sign for tourists heading here.
The documents continue listing a series of advice addressing issues related to drugs, all of which are illegal in Mexico, sexual assault, drowning, and more.
What to do before your trip
The U.S. The Embassy also recommends a series of actions to take before heading to this country. Among these are the enrollment in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program.
This will make it easier for tourists to receive the latest information regarding Mexico’s safety while also helping the U.S. government to contact them in case of emergency.
The official advisory also advises American visitors to purchase travel insurance, drink responsibly, regularly monitor their credit and debit cards, and protect their belongings at all times, especially when using public transport.
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico also remind tourists to dial 911 in case of emergency, possibly by asking a Spanish speaker for help in case the call will be answered by someone who does not speak English.
In light of all of these recommendations, should tourists heading to Los Cabos soon for the upcoming spring break worry for their safety?
Is Los Cabos safe?
Despite the recent U.S. Advisory, Los Cabos remains largely safe for American tourists.
Not by chance, report after report keeps placing this municipality among the best when it comes to the safety of both its inhabitants and visitors.
The local government is constantly working on new measures to keep protecting people heading here.
For instance, local authorities have recently decided to increase road patrols in the municipality to make sure everyone drives safely and to try to decrease the number of car accidents taking place in the area.
On top of this, popular areas of Cabo San Lucas, including its downtown area and the popular Medano Beach, will experience increased security during the spring break season.
Last but not least, the local government is also cracking down on unauthorized street vendors to avoid tourists getting scammed during their Los Cabos trip.
Despite this, there are a few safety tips everyone heading to Los Cabos should adopt.
A few safety tips for Los Cabos spring visitors
Regardless of your swimming skills, always follow local warnings and avoid entering the water whenever a red or black flag is placed on the beach, as these indicate the water conditions are dangerous even for experienced swimmers.
Stay out of the water also when spotting a white flag, as this is an indication that jellyfish are present in the ocean. Lastly, yellow flags mean that access to the water is allowed only if exercising high levels of caution.
Apart from this, tourists should always pre-book their transportation as, unfortunately, unlicensed taxis are quite common in the area.
The government is now working on this issue, but in the meantime, travelers should try their best to avoid unauthorized tourist transfer services.
Ask your hotel or resort to organize a transfer for you or opt for world-renowned companies such as Uber.
