In recent years, Los Cabos has become one of the most popular Mexican destinations among American tourists.
This is due to several factors, including the municipality’s breathtaking beaches, luxury resorts, and a vast selection of outdoor activities to make the most out of the sunny weather typical of this region.
But there is one main reason that keeps attracting tourists from all over the USA to Los Cabos: its high safety levels.
The local government is constantly trying to improve its levels of safety with several initiatives. This is why, in recent days, it was announced that the Los Cabos authorities have now decided to hire more police officers to keep tourists safe.
More policemen
A few days ago, the General Directorate of Public Security, Preventive Police and Municipal Traffic of Los Cabos announced that new police officer positions, in particular vacancies for the role of preventive police officer, are now open to the public.
New members of the police will be paid a base salary of 22,400 pesos per month, roughly $1,300. People wanting to apply for this position will be asked to present several documents, among which their high school diploma.
This is a recent policy that was first put in place in 2023, when the local government decided to further professionalize its police officers by making it mandatory to be in possession of a high school diploma to work in this field.
The training to become a police officer consists of a period of six months for members of the State Police Department and four months for penitentiary policemen.
During this period, cadets will receive a monthly scholarship of 10.000 pesos, about $585.
Is Los Cabos safe?
In light of the recent decision to hire new policemen in the Los Cabos municipality, people heading here soon for their holidays may now be wondering whether this area is safe for tourists. Luckily, the answer is yes.
Most people living in Los Cabos work in the tourism sector. This means that if safety levels were ever to drop in the area, most tourists would start opting for other destinations, leading to an economic crisis for most of the people living here.
This is one of the main reasons why the Los Cabos government has made it its number one priority to constantly increase its safety levels through a number of projects, such as the recent decision to hire new police officers.
But what are some of the most recent initiatives put in place by the Los Cabos authorities to keep tourists safe?
Latest initiatives to keep Los Cabos tourists safe
Just a few days ago, the State of Baja California Sur decided to invest $2 million to upgrade the emergency and law enforcement response in the area.
Talking about this initiative, the State of Baja California Sur Secretary of Public Security, Luis Alfredo Cancino Vicente, said: “Starting the year with a significant investment for the benefit of C4 (Control, Command, Communication, and Computing Center) will allow us to strengthen the service provided to the community in an issue as delicate and important as the attention and dispatch of emergency calls.”
The money will mainly be invested in the construction of a new facility which will host a state-of-the-art dispatch and surveillance area, featuring an operator center for incoming 089 and 911 calls from citizens.
Another recent initiative aiming at better protecting tourists heading to Los Cabos consists of an increase in road patrols in the area.
This decision was taken in light of the many road accidents which frequently occur in this municipality.
Not by chance, the number of car crashes experienced a drastic increase in 2023 compared to 2022. According to local data, a total of 500 people were injured on the municipality roadways and highways in 2023. This is more than one person per day.
This new initiative will not only bring more road patrols in the area but it will also lead to the creation of awareness campaigns as well as an increase in the number of fines given to drivers who do not respect speed limits.
