With the arrival of the high seasons, more and more tourists every day are now flocking to the San José del Cabo Estuary.
This Ecological Reserve is popular among animal lovers and, in particular, bird watchers, as a great number of birds of different species inhabit it.
But more tourists also means a higher risk of damaging this delicate ecosystem. This is why local authorities are urging tourists to follow these rules when visiting the San José del Cabo Estuary.
The rules
The coordinator of this Ecological Reserve, Carlos Ruiz Botello, emphasized that, even though this natural area remains open for the high season, tourists should be extremely cautious when visiting, making sure to limit their impact as much as possible.
However, this shouldn’t deter visitors from exploring this area, as Carlos Ruiz Botello declared: “In relation to the recommendations that we can give in December in the care of the Estero de San José del Cabo Natural Reserve, I tell you that you can visit it without any problem.”
He later added that dog owners can also visit the area with their pets for as long as they keep their four-legged friends on the leash at all times:
“(Dogs) must always be on a leash to prevent any damage (to) the flora and fauna found in the place,” said Carlos Ruiz Botello.
Another important rule issued by the Estero San José del Cabo State Ecological Reserve is the prohibition of the use of fire or any other flammable material.
Unfortunately, this area, similar to the rest of the Los Cabos municipality, is at high risk of fire. Not by chance, in the last few months, local firemen have incessantly worked to put down several fires in the municipality some of which caused huge damage to both local nature and infrastructures.
Talking about this issue, Carlos Ruiz Botello commented: “The use of fire is prohibited under any circumstances (…).”
He later specified that in case park rangers or the cameras in the Monitoring and Video Surveillance Center were to detect fire in the park, those responsible would be immediately notified.
Carlos Ruiz Botello continued his speech, by saying that if those responsible were to ignore such warnings: “It is the turn of public security to do what is appropriate.”
The coordinator of this Ecological Reserve also reminded visitors that the use of pyrotechnics and all kinds of fireworks and explosives is severely prohibited within the territories of the San José del Cabo Estuary.
“Why? Because it does damage to the ecosystem, it disturbs and disorients the fauna and flora,” said Carlos Ruiz Botello.
Lastly, he stressed the importance of avoiding leaving trash behind. Tourists visiting this area are asked to bring their own bags to dispose of their waste to avoid pollution.
Everything you need to know about the San José del Cabo Estuary
The San José del Cabo Estuary, located close to the Hotel Zone, is the largest body of freshwater in southern Baja California Sur.
This estuary is incredibly important for the local population as, for over 250 years, it has provided those living in the area with fresh water that was used both for drinking as well as irrigation purposes.
Today, this is a protected area. This is why all types of vehicles are prohibited from entering this Ecological Reserve to avoid damaging its delicate ecosystem.
The San José del Cabo Estuary is quite popular among tourists as it gives them the possibility to try out a number of activities and sports.
From kayaking to hiking and bird watching, this is a great place to spend a relaxing day away from the huge crowds typical of Los Cabos during the high seasons.
It is here that the freshwater from the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains mix with the saltwater from the Sea of Cortéz, creating a unique ecosystem where different species of animals live in complete harmony. Some of the birds living in this area include sparrow hawks, red-tailed hawks, and herons, just to name a few.
