It’s been quite the year for awards and honors for the Mexican beach resort destination of Los Cabos.
So far, a total of 18 different worldwide travel awards have been bestowed upon the tourist hotspot, including the prestigious “Best Destination in Mexico” for the very first time.
Usually, Travel Weekly Magazine’s Readers Choice award has been bestowed upon Los Cabos’ neighbors in the Yucatan, such as Cancun. At least, that’s how it has been for the past more than two decades.
But something has changed in Los Cabos that has attracted the attention of vacation getaway travelers from around the world. Exactly what is it?
The Los Cabos Tourism Trust has a theory about what has propelled Los Cabos into the travel limelight.
An Elite Travel Destination
The Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (Fiturca) Rodrigo Esponda Cascajares, has cited that the 18 different worldwide travel honors bestowed upon the beach resort destination of Los Cabos represent a significant shift in traveler perception and development of the region into an elite travel destination.
He commented that the fact that Los Cabos was finally recognized by travel agents in the United States for its high level of hospitality and exclusivity demonstrates the evolution of the beach resort destination.
“This year has been remarkable, the truth is that we did not expect to have so many recognitions this year,” said Director Esponda Cascajares. “This award was given this week by Travel Weekly’s Readers Choice Awards, which has been awarded for 22 years and has always been received by destinations on the Yucatan Peninsula, whether Cancun or Riviera Maya. It is something that surprised us because the base sanction award for the votes made by travel agents.”
Evolution of Los Cabos
It’s quite a shift in traveler perception from the Los Cabos which was better known as a college Spring Break party destination just a few years ago.
The evolution of Los Cabos now has transitioned the perception of the area into a more exclusive luxury destination. That’s in part due to higher-end guest amenities, more luxury accommodations, and don’t forget the celebrity endorsements on social media throughout the year.
Part of the success of the repositioning of Los Cabos in the travel marketplace also comes from the successful efforts to focus the community on three popular travel trends this year – sustainability, nature and wellness.
That’s been a winner with travelers this year looking to experience these three travel trends after the lockdowns connected to the pandemic.
They are the ones responding to the numerous award surveys and their travel agents about how Los Cabos met their needs for a vacation this year.
The awards have followed the trend, including Best Sustainable Destination in Mexico, Best Destination Marketing Campaign Worldwide, and Destination with the Highest Customer Satisfaction in Mexico.
What Travelers Can Expect in 2024
The popularity of Los Cabos this year ultimately should benefit travelers to the beach resort destination in 2024 with more amenities coming to meet their needs. More upscale resorts, more adventure tours and more options to enjoy a vacation getaway.
All of this will come at a cost. Literally, Los Cabos is no longer a budget vacation getaway frequented by college students seeking a Spring Break party.
Tourists should expect to pay more for their vacation, and other lower-cost locations will receive more budget-oriented consumers.
Los Cabos was recently highlighted on the Travel + Leisure’s Best 50 Places to Travel in 2024 list. The new year is looking up for travelers enjoying their luxury vacation getaway to the premier beach resort destination on the Mexican Pacific Coast.
