According to recent data published by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, where Los Cabos is located, is among the safest in the country.

Only 21 cases of femicide were registered in this area in the period from December 2018 to October 2023. This is an incredibly low number compared to the rest of the country, where a total of over 10,000 cases were reported.

The report also shows how from the beginning of this year to November, only two cases of femicides were reported in Baja California Sur. One occurred in the municipality of La Paz, while the other took place in Los Cabos.

Data published by SESNSP ranked Baja California among the safest states in Mexico together with Campeche, Yucatán, Tlaxcala, Colima, Zacatecas, Coahuila, and Sonora.

On the other hand, the areas with the highest numbers of homicides were Veracruz, Mexico City, Nuevo León, Jalisco, Puebla, Chihuahua, and Oaxaca.

Stop the Violence Against Women campaign

Local authorities attribute Baja California’s positive results to the ‘Stop Violence Against Women’ campaign. This initiative was promoted by Governor Víctor Castro Cosío at the beginning of the year and has proved to be extremely beneficial.

Not by chance, the state reported a significant reduction in femicide cases compared to 2022, when a total of six women were killed.

Saúl González Núñez, The general secretary of the Government of the State of Baja California Sur, firmly believes that now more women feel safe in reporting cases of violence and declared: “If you report it, it is because you trust the institutions and I think that this effort is something that we have to highlight.”

Is Los Cabos safe?

The recent SESNSP report clearly shows positive data, but tourists heading to Los Cabos may still wonder whether this is a safe destination for their holidays. Luckily, the answer is yes!

Los Cabos is regularly ranked among the states with the highest safety levels in Mexico, with one of the latest reports published roughly a week ago showing how this destination is one of the top three in Mexico when it comes to safety for international travelers.

Commenting on this positive result, the Los Cabos Mayor, Oscar Leggs Castro, declared that this success must be attributed to a strategic partnership with the Mexican military, which provided members of the Navy and other armed forces to this municipality to keep tourists and locals safe at all times.

These results shouldn’t be too surprising as the local authorities in Los Cabos regularly put in place new initiatives to increase the safety levels of this area.

For instance, just a few days ago, the local authorities decided to increase the number of police officers patrolling the main tourist sites in Los Cabos due to the expected increase of foreigners who will soon flock to this area with the beginning of the winter season.

Military Patrolling the Cabo San Lucas Marina

This is only one of the many new measures the local government has been working on this year.

To give a few extra examples, in the last few months, it was decided that the most popular beach in the municipality, El Medano Beach, would be patrolled 24/7.

The local authorities decided to take this decision to reduce the number of unauthorized vendors selling fake services on the beach as well as to keep bathers safe from the ever-changing water conditions typical of this area.

The truth is that Los Cabos is an incredibly popular destination among foreign tourists, and most of its inhabitants rely on tourism to make a living.

This means that if safety levels in the area were to decrease, fewer and fewer tourists would choose this municipality for their holiday, causing an economic crisis in the area.

This is why Los Cabos is still one of the safest municipalities in Mexico, and there are very good chances it will remain so for many years to come.
