Los Cabos officials have been busy lately, working to prepare the local beaches and popular tourist outdoor recreation areas for the upcoming fall and winter holiday travel rush.
While Hurricane Lidia passed well to the south of Los Cabos and instead hit the western coast of the State of Jalisco, the impact in Baja California Sur was widespread on the coastline.
Not only did the storm runoff cause an issue with pollution and sewage flowing down the urban streams of Los Cabos into the ocean, but a bunch of hazardous debris was churned up by the storm tempest in the ocean.
Now the clean up has begun to reset the Blue Flag certified beaches of Los Cabos for the next peak season just weeks away.
Preparing for Peak
Staff of the Municipal Coordination of the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone of Los Cabos took to the beaches at the end of the week to sweep the coasts of trash and hazardous items.
One goal was to have the local beaches of Los Cabos, especially those in the tourist zone, back in top shape for the guests after the impact of Hurricane Lidia.
Local officials also wanted to remove the solid waste washed up on the Los Cabos shore so that it did not flow back into the water and pose a health risk to peak season visitors enjoying the water along with protecting the marine life.
Maintaining Blue Flag Accreditation
Another main focus of the quick cleaning turnaround after the impact of Hurricane Lidia was to maintain the Blue Flag quality accreditation standards.
Less than one month ago, the accrediting agency for Blue Flag beaches recognized the most recent slate of beaches meeting the highest standard for safety, access, and cleanliness.
At the event, Los Cabos was recognized as the beach resort destination in Mexico, with the largest number of beaches meeting the strict environmental and sustainability standards with a total of 25 honored beaches.
It also received the honor of being the location in all of Latin America with the largest number of Blue Flag certified beaches.
When selecting beach destinations to visit, international tourists often select destinations that meet the prestigious Blue Flag global standard.
It also contributes to the perception of Los Cabos being a leader in sustainability.
That’s an important factor that the Los Cabos Tourism Trust recognized as a worldwide trend for destination travel vacation tourism.
The other two factors recognized by the Los Cabos Tourism Trust as driving international destination tourism include wellness and nature. Both are very closely connected to the oceans around the world.
Ready For Tourists
Travelers arriving in Los Cabos for the peak fall and winter holiday travel season can feel confident that the beaches were recently swept clean of debris and hazardous materials prior to their vacation getaway arrival in the beach resort destination.
Some of the recently collected items from Los Cabos tourist beaches included waste such as sharp metal items, aluminum, cigarette butts, packaging, and wrappers, along with driftwood and sharp glass debris.
The last major cleaning effort of the tourist beaches of Los Cabos to prepare for the peak visitor season was conducted last September, where more than one ton of solid waste was collected and removed from the area’s coastline.
The regular cleaning of the popular Los Cabos beaches, such as the tourist zone’s popular El Medano beach, displays the municipality’s commitment to the health and safety of visitors during the peak fall and winter travel season.
It also shows the mission to maintain the prestigious Blue Flag quality accreditation for travelers all over the world to come and enjoy their vacation getaway in the sun, sand, and surf of Los Cabos.
