The data shows that in September 2023, a total of 131 robberies were reported in Los Cabos, significantly less compared to the same period last year.

According to the report, the neighborhoods showing higher crime rates in Cabo San Lucas are Mesa Colorado and Los Cangrejos.

Similarly, the areas with the highest rates of crimes in San José del Cabo are Santa Rosa and La Ballena.

Is Los Cabos safe?

People wanting to book a trip to Los Cabos may now be wondering whether 131 robberies per month is an alarming number or if this municipality can be considered safe for tourists. Luckily, the answer is the latter.

Reports keep confirming that Los Cabos is among the safest municipalities in Mexico.

In particular, in the latest data released by the Mexican government, the state of Baja California Sur was ranked last for violent crimes.

Discussing the data, the Secretary of Security affirmed: Baja California Sur stands out at the national level as the entity that registered the lowest number of intentional homicides – with 20- from January to July of this year.”

Given the data, it is not too surprising that a recent report from the Center for Research and Tourism Competitiveness (CICOTUR) found that foreign visitors consider Los Cabos one of the safest areas in the country.

But how did Los Cabos manage to reach such high levels of safety compared to the rest of Mexico?

How is the Los Cabos government improving safety?

The Los Cabos authorities are constantly trying to improve the safety levels in their territories not only to keep their citizens safe but also because this is one of the main reasons why tourists keep coming back here.

Street in Cabo San Lucas

This is why there are so many public initiatives in the municipality whose aim is to deter acts of criminality.

For instance, authorities recently declared that the most tourist beach in Cabo San Lucas, El Medano Beach, will be monitored 24/7.

This decision was taken not only to prevent small acts of crime but also to protect tourists and locals alike from the ever-changing water conditions that may, at times, be extremely dangerous.

This is only one of the several initiatives that the Los Cabos government has put into place in the last few days.

Municipal police in Mexico

For instance, authorities recently announced that police officers without a school diploma would lose their job positions in an attempt to further professionalize the police forces in the area.

Last but not least, just a few days ago, the government announced an increase in the police presence in the municipality to deter all acts of criminality.

According to the announcement, the General Directorate of Public Security, Preventive Police, and Municipal Traffic will now conduct continuous safe street operations to monitor several areas in both Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

Despite the high level of safety registered in Los Cabos, tourists are still advised to exercise basic levels of caution.

As in every tourist destination in the world, adopting a few safety measures when visiting a new place can make the whole difference and help people avoid unpleasant events.

For instance, visitors should avoid wearing or carrying with themselves expensive valuables. On top of this, when spending time in the ocean, tourists are advised to leave their bags close to one of the many safeguards patrolling the beach.

But this is not all. Visitors should also pay attention to online scammers.

At the beginning of the 2023 summer, authorities warned tourists against fake activity packages sold online. Some websites managed to sell tickets for activities that never took place and even reservations for hotels that were not opened yet.

However, it is important to remember that, despite the few local scams and small crimes taking place in the area, tourists in Los Cabos should not worry too much about their safety and can enjoy a relaxing holiday in one of the most paradisiac corners of Mexico.
