September and October are traditionally known as the low season in Los Cabos when budget travelers to the beach resort destination can find deals on lower-priced hotel rooms and airfares.
That’s in response to a traditional drop in room occupancy levels, which so far this year is down 13 percent.
However, this year is shaping up to not follow that budget-friendly trend.
Hotels Refuse to Lower Rates
In other parts of the country, such as the tourist hotspot of Cancun, hotels and resorts will normally drop their room rates to maintain an average occupancy level during the slow months of 60 percent.
However, Los Cabos plans to buck that trend among Mexican beach resort destinations this year.
According to the President of the Board of Directors of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, Mauricio Salicrup, Los Cabos hotels will not lower their room rates this year to appear as a discount location for cheap low-season travel.
He stressed that the hotels and resorts in Los Cabos should not have a marketing strategy of devaluing room rates and customer experience to attract more travelers to the town.
Instead, they should focus on maintaining the marketing image of the town as a luxury beach resort destination and keep prices the same.
The thought is the lowering of room rates for the low season will hurt the employment, economy, and overall brand image of Los Cabos more than it will benefit the area.
What Should Budget Travelers Do?
With the new focus on maintaining luxury price levels even during slow months in Los Cabos, what should budget travelers do?

There are actually a number of different options to consider to still enjoy a lower-priced Los Cabos vacation, even with the hotels refusing to lower their high room rates.
Visit on Weekdays
A great travel tip for lower hotel room rates and airfares is to avoid traveling on the weekend when most visitors think about starting their vacations.
Traditionally, room rates and airfares are cheaper mid-week than they are during the peak weekend travel period.
Book by Rates, Not Dates
Try being flexible with your vacation dates in Los Cabos.
Instead of choosing dates and then looking at the prices, try doing it the other way around. Look at when the room rates are low and then pick your dates accordingly.
Book in Advance
For the best deals on hotel room rates, it is always smart to book in advance.
Usually, six months or so in advance is the sweet spot for locking in hotel room deals. While it is obviously too late to book six months in advance for this low season, the sooner the better!
But beware! Just because you reserved a room doesn’t guarantee you got the best rates. Sometimes, hotels and resorts will lower prices closer to the arrival date because the rooms are not filling as fast as expected.
Locking in a cancelable rate now is smart, but continue to monitor the rate until the week of travel. Often, travelers will find that the hotel may have a special lower than the rate a tourist locked in early.
Use Credit Card Points
If a tourist has a credit card with travel points, it may be a good way to pay for a hotel room in Los Cabos without using any cash.
This can especially be good for points or miles that were earned simply as a sign-up bonus with the card.
Also, some hotels and resorts may offer specials with credit card companies for travelers using points or miles for reservations. Be sure to check for these smart budget deals from time to time.
Book Directly with the Hotel
Last, it is often a better deal to book the reservation directly with the hotel instead of a third-party website where the hotel has to pay commissions.
Travelers can accomplish this by visiting the hotel’s website. They may also offer special deals for those who call the front desk directly. So, be sure to try that money-saving tip as well!
