Your Cabo Airport Ride Will Get Up To 45 Minutes Faster: What Tourists Need To Know

Share The Article

Getting to and from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is about to get significantly easier. For years, the journey between the hotel zone and the airport terminals has been plagued by a major traffic bottleneck at the entrance to San José del Cabo, but that agonizing wait is finally coming to an end.

The massive underpass project at the “Glorieta de las Mujeres Libres de Baja California Sur” roundabout has an official completion date: April 30, 2026.

This infrastructure upgrade, which has been under heavy construction for the past 11 months, is designed to resolve a mobility crisis that had become a daily headache for the destination. Here is a practical look at what this new roadway means for your upcoming Baja vacation.

A Drastic Reduction in Wait Times

The absolute biggest benefit for both travelers and locals is the sheer amount of time saved. Officials estimate that the new underpass will reduce airport transfer times by up to 45 minutes.

For a municipality that processes thousands of arriving tourists every single day, this change is monumental. The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) previously identified this specific roundabout as the highest-traffic checkpoint in the entire state, dealing with a staggering flow of over 60,000 vehicles daily.

By opening the lower underpass, highway traffic can completely bypass the surface-level roundabout, eliminating the miles-long lines of brake lights that historically formed during peak flight arrival windows.

Fast-Tracked for the Summer Season

Originally, the massive construction project was not slated to finish until July.

However, local authorities and developers implemented 24-hour work shifts during the initial months of the project to drastically accelerate the timeline and avoid a total collapse of the city’s traffic grid.

Currently, work crews are in the absolute final stages of the project, focusing entirely on:

  • Pouring the final hydraulic concrete for the main underpass.
  • Finishing the northern exit ramps.
  • Completing the final details on the southern lateral section, specifically near the Las Mañanitas development and the Hyatt Hotel.

More Upgrades on the Horizon

The completion of the San José del Cabo roundabout is just the first step in a broader initiative to upgrade the region’s infrastructure.

Local authorities have already identified the next critical mobility projects, including the construction of the El Zacatal bridge and the expansion of the highway connecting Santa Anita to Buenavista into four lanes.

These future developments will directly benefit the northern zones and improve access to the expanding coastal communities.

Tips for Your Next Airport Transfer

If you are flying into or out of Los Cabos in late April or early May, here is how to navigate the final transition:

  • Verify Your Route: Even though the underpass officially opens on April 30, expect some minor final adjustments, street sweeping, and signage installation to continue for a few days afterward.
  • Enjoy the Extra Time: Shaving up to 45 minutes off your highway commute means less stress when heading to SJD for your departure. You can use that extra buffer to comfortably navigate the airport check-in counters—which is especially helpful since Southwest bags no longer fly free, meaning lines at the luggage drop can occasionally back up.
  • Stick to Private Transport: With the new traffic flow, federally authorized private airport shuttles will be able to operate with much greater efficiency, resulting in more precise pickup times and a much smoother ride to the beach.
