Landing at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) brings an immediate rush of excitement—until you turn the corner and see a massive, winding immigration line. Historically, the arrival process at SJD could take anywhere from 45 minutes to well over an hour during peak travel windows, eating directly into your valuable beach time.
Fortunately, the days of standing in the grueling traditional line are over for many travelers.
To handle the explosive growth in international arrivals, Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) has officially rolled out Automated Migration Filters (AMF)—commonly known as e-gates—inside SJD’s Terminal 2. By replacing the face-to-face officer interview with lightning-fast biometric scanners, the airport is slashing wait times dramatically. Eligible travelers are now clearing customs and heading to the taxi stand in under 15 minutes.

Here is everything you need to know about the new e-gates, who is eligible to skip the line, and how to navigate the scanners without holding up the queue.
Who Qualifies For The E-Gates?
Before you sprint toward the glowing automated kiosks, you need to make sure you actually meet the legal criteria. The e-gates are not available for everyone. To bypass the traditional immigration line, you must meet all of the following requirements:

- The Right Nationality: The system is open to citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and 26 other eligible countries (including the UK, France, Germany, and Japan).
- A Biometric Passport: You must hold a valid, ordinary electronic passport (look for the gold camera chip icon printed on the front cover) that is valid for at least 180 days.
- Adults Only: You must be 18 years of age or older.
- No Minors In Your Group: If you are traveling with children under 18, your entire family must use the traditional, in-person immigration line. Minors cannot use the e-gates for safety and operational reasons.
- Tourism Only: You must be entering Mexico strictly for tourism. If you hold a temporary or permanent residency card, a student visa, or are traveling for business, you cannot use the automated gates. Doing so could jeopardize your legal residency status.

How To Use The Kiosks (Without Being “That” Tourist)
The e-gates are designed to be entirely self-service, but they only work quickly if travelers know what they are doing. Do not be the person who holds up the fast lane.
- The Prep Work: As you approach the kiosk, remove your sunglasses, hat, and any face masks. The system relies on facial recognition, so the camera needs a completely unobstructed view of your face.
- The Passport Scan: Open your passport directly to the photo and data page. Place it face down on the glass scanner and press it completely flat. Do not slide it around or lift it up. Wait a few seconds until the screen flashes green and the first set of glass doors opens.
- The Stare-Down: Step inside the enclosed gate and stand completely still. Look directly into the camera on the screen in front of you. The system will automatically validate your biometric data against your passport chip.
- The Golden Ticket: Once verified, a small ticket will print out, and the secondary doors will open, officially granting you entry into Mexico.

The Most Important Step: Keep Your Receipt!
The absolute biggest mistake travelers make with the new e-gate system happens right after they walk through the doors.
Because you are no longer filling getting a physical stamp in your passport, that small printed ticket you grab from the kiosk is your only physical proof of legal entry.
This receipt contains a unique QR code and a digital seal. You must keep this ticket safe for the entire duration of your trip. If you scan the QR code with your smartphone, it will allow you to download your official Digital Multiple Migration Form (Digital FMM). You may be required to present this digital form or the physical ticket to authorities when you depart the country. Treat that small piece of paper like cash—snap a photo of it immediately as a backup, and tuck the physical copy safely inside your passport.
