At the beginning of 2023, the Los Cabos Tourist Trust focused on reinventing the beach resort destination for a new tourist audience.
Instead of focusing on filling rooms with budget travelers and college students, they instead decided to spend their energy investing in the luxury traveler segment.
That strategy has actually been a resounding success this year as Los Cabos attracted more travelers looking for luxury amenities and accommodations.
There were several factors that contributed to the growth of luxury travelers to the beach resort destination. One of the most important factors was the availability of multiple airport access in the municipality.
Multiple Airport Access
Los Cabos is one of the few cities in Mexico with more than one international airport. That has allowed for one airport to cater to the general population while one focuses more on upscale private jet luxury travelers.
In fact, the smaller Cabo San Lucas airport has received more than 30 percent of the luxury private aircraft arrivals in Los Cabos. That has allowed the Los Cabos International Airport to focus more on the public commercial arrivals.
Last year, there were more than 90,000 visitors that arrived by private aircraft in Los Cabos according to the Los Cabos International Air Terminal Advisory Council.
That more exclusive airport access has appealed to luxury travelers looking for a bit more privacy around their arrival in Los Cabos, especially in the case of business executives or even well-known celebrities.
That’s a number that the Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, Rodrigo Esponda Cascajares, is only expecting to increase this next year.
To keep up with the demands of luxury travelers, Los Cabos will need to continue adding more luxury amenities.
Luxury Amenities and Accommodations
The addition of luxury amenities and accommodations is a work in progress for Los Cabos.
Over the last couple of years, Los Cabos has been focused on adding high-end amenities targeted towards a more luxury-oriented traveler, such as spa services and fancier hotels.
Recently, the posh St Regis Hotels & Resorts brand from Marriott International announced that it will be opening a resort in Los Cabos to offer services to travelers who enjoy the finer things in life when on vacation and don’t mind paying for them.
If that is not enough luxury, visitors to Los Cabos can already enjoy a luxe escape at the Grand Velas resort in Los Cabos where the nightly room rate at the all-inclusive resort normally tops $1,000 per night.
During the day, luxury guests in Los Cabos can have the resort concierge secure them a tee time on one of the many golf courses in the beach resort community, possibly including one that just hosted the FedEx Cup’s World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos.
Of course, if a luxury traveler doesn’t have their own private aircraft, the airline JSX is providing upscale semi-private jet service to Los Cabos from both Los Angeles International Airport and Dallas Love Field.
The only thing really needing more of an upgrade in Los Cabos is the higher-end food scene, including Michelin Star rated restaurants. However, that will definitely come with time.
Destination Luxe Travel
Next year will continue the evolution of Los Cabos as a premier luxury beach resort destination in Mexico.
The Los Cabos Tourism Trust continues to promote the destination for the rich and famous and more amenities for the higher end travel segment is expected to be not only announced, but also opened in the next year.
For those interested in Los Cabos as a budget vacation destination, that time has come and gone. Travelers to Los Cabos should expect higher room rates and higher amenity costs next year to correspond with the focus on more affluent travelers looking for luxe travel.
