For decades, the rule of a Cabo vacation was simple: You sleep at the resort, but you party downtown.
The marina and the famous “club district” (home to Squid Roe, Mandala, etc.) were the undisputed center of gravity for nightlife. But this season, that magnetic pull seems to be weakening.
According to a new report, business owners in downtown Cabo San Lucas are sounding the alarm. Despite high hotel occupancy across the destination, sales in the city center during the peak 2025 holiday season missed expectations.

While sales did grow by 20%, they fell short of the projected targets. The hotels are full, but the bars and shops downtown aren’t seeing the same boom.
So, if the tourists are here, but they aren’t there, where are they?
1. The “Golden Cage” Effect (Resort Nightlife)
The biggest competitor to downtown Cabo isn’t another city; it’s the hotel lobby.
Over the last two years, luxury resorts have aggressively upgraded their own nightlife offerings to keep guests (and their wallets) on the property.
- The Shift: Hotels are no longer just offering a lobby bar with a piano player. They are hosting full-scale beach parties, hiring resident DJs, and opening high-end speakeasies on-site (like the rooftop at The Cape or the lounge at Nobu).
- The result: Guests are realizing they can have a “wild” night without a $40 taxi ride or the hassle of navigating the downtown crowds.

2. The Migration to San José del Cabo
There is a distinct vibe shift happening. Travelers who find the “Spring Break energy” of San Lucas too chaotic are increasingly spending their evenings in San José del Cabo.
The Art District offers a nightlife experience that feels more “Tulum” than “Vegas.”
- The Vibe: Instead of shot girls and loud house music, you have jazz bars, mezcal tasting rooms, and courtyard dining.
- The Demographic: It is attracting the 30+ crowd that wants a great night out but wants to wake up without their ears ringing.

3. The Service Fatigue
Oliver Francisco Arriaga, Vice President of the Association of Professionals, hinted at a critical issue in the report: the need for “better staff training.”
Downtown Cabo can be an intense sensory experience. Between the aggressive street vendors and the high-pressure sales tactics at some venues, “service fatigue” is real.
- The Reality: Tourists are becoming more sensitive to the hassle. If the service downtown feels transactional or aggressive, they retreat to the sanctuary of their resort or the quieter streets of San José.

The Bottom Line
Downtown Cabo isn’t dying—Spring Break will likely pack the streets again in March. But the days of it being the only option are over.
If you are coming down this month, you now have three distinct choices:
- Cabo San Lucas: For the high-energy, bucket-list party.
- San José: For the aesthetic, culinary night out.
- The Resort: For the easiest commute of your life.
