What Travelers Need To Know About The New Years Eve Fireworks In Los Cabos

Share The Article

There is no party quite like New Year’s Eve in Cabo San Lucas.

When the clock strikes midnight, the entire bay of Medano Beach lights up in a massive, coordinated pyrotechnic display that rivals major cities like Sydney or Dubai. It is a bucket-list experience.

What Travelers Need To Know About The New Years Eve Fireworks In Los Cabos

However, it is also a night of logistical chaos, strict laws, and massive crowds. If you are planning to ring in 2026 here, you need to know the rules of the road. Specifically, you need to know that while watching the fireworks is a national pastime, touching them is a crime.

Here at The Cabo Sun, we want you to start the new year with a champagne toast, not a police fine. Here is your insider guide to the fireworks—where to watch them, how to get there, and why you definitely shouldn’t try to buy your own.

The “Do Not Touch” Rule: It Is Illegal

Every year, tourists ask: “Where can I buy fireworks to set off on the beach?”

The answer is: You can’t.

The sale, transport, and use of pyrotechnics by individuals is strictly prohibited in Los Cabos without a specific permit from the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA). This isn’t a suggestion; it’s the law.

Local authorities conduct safety operations throughout December to raid stalls selling illegal fireworks. If you are caught setting off rockets or firecrackers on the beach, you face confiscation, heavy fines, and a potential night in jail. Leave the explosives to the professionals; the official show is bigger than anything you could buy anyway.

Staying At A Resort? You Have The Best Seat

If you are booked at a major resort on Medano Beach (like ME Cabo, Pueblo Bonito, Riu, or Villa del Palmar), do not leave.

You already have the VIP view. These resorts coordinate the bay-wide show. The fireworks are launched from barges directly in front of these hotels. Your hotel will likely host a massive gala dinner on the sand. While expensive, it is worth it to avoid the gridlock outside.

Even if you are staying in the Tourist Corridor, many resorts (like Grand Velas or Hilton) host their own private displays. Check with your concierge before you make plans to head downtown; you might not need to go anywhere.

Where To Watch If You Aren’t On The Beach

If you are staying at an Airbnb or a hotel inland, you have three main options to see the big show over the bay.

1. Medano Beach (The Public Party) The beach itself is public. Thousands of people gather on the sand with coolers and blankets.

  • The Vibe: Chaotic, loud, and incredibly fun.
  • The Warning: As we noted in our Medano Beach survival guide, it will be shoulder-to-shoulder. Arrive by 9:00 PM if you want a spot near the water.

2. The Marina Boardwalk For a slightly more civilized view, walk the marina promenade. You won’t see the fireworks launching directly overhead, but you will see the reflection of the show in the water, framed by the yachts. It is packed, but you are on pavement, not sand.

3. The “Sunset” Restaurants High-altitude spots like Sunset Monalisa or the rooftop at The Cape offer a panoramic view of the entire coastline exploding in light. These reservations usually sell out by October, but it’s worth checking for cancellations.

The Traffic Nightmare

The biggest challenge isn’t seeing the fireworks; it’s getting home afterwards. Traffic in downtown Cabo San Lucas comes to a complete standstill from 11:00 PM to 2:00 AM. Uber surge pricing will be astronomical, and taxis will be scarce.

The Strategy: If you go downtown, plan to stay there until 2:00 AM, or be prepared to walk a significant distance to catch a ride outside the gridlock zone.
