Traveler Alert: Road From Cabo San Lucas To San Jose Del Cabo Delays Impact Transport Times

Share The Article

At The Cabo Sun, we want you agonizing over fish-taco choices—not gridlock maps. That’s why we’re sounding a fresh traffic alert.

Road-trippers, airport-dashers, and day-trippers alike should budget extra time on the Tourist Corridor this month. Beginning in the next 48 hours, crews will close one westbound lane at San José del Cabo’s busy Fonatur roundabout to relocate Aqueduct No. 2 and pave a temporary bypass behind the Chedraui Selecto supermarket.

Officials say the works will last “about two weeks,” and—even with traffic flaggers and fresh signage—drivers can expect slower journeys between Cabo San Lucas and SJD Airport until mid-August.

🚧 Why Are We Hitting The Brakes?

Los Cabos is building a long-promised overpass at the Fonatur roundabout to unclog the region’s worst pinch-point. The structure is already 21 percent complete, slightly ahead of schedule, but relocating a major water line now makes a short lane closure unavoidable.

Municipal president Christian Agúndez has ordered round-the-clock supervision and weekly mobility-board meetings to keep the project on track and the public informed.

⏰ How Long Will Delays Last?

The lane that funnels traffic from SJD toward Cabo San Lucas will stay shut for “at least 14 days,” according to the state SICT director.

While officials hope to keep extra wait times under 30 minutes, past closures in the same area have stretched peak-hour transfers to two hours or more.

Rush-hour pressure is heaviest 7:30–10:30 a.m. southbound and 5:00–9:00 p.m. northbound, so plan accordingly.

🗺️ Where Is The Detour?

The new paved bypass cuts behind the Chedraui Selecto shopping center, then rejoins Highway 1 just south of Arroyo Costa Azul.

Contractors will reinforce signage, deploy flaggers, and keep one eastbound lane open to maintain two-way flow.

Navigation apps usually catch up fast, but refresh your route before setting out—cell coverage can drop near the arroyo.

✈️ What This Means For Airport & Resort Transfers

  • SJD Airport arrivals: Shuttle rides to Cabo San Lucas could take 60–90 minutes instead of the usual 45. Build in a buffer if you have spa or tee-time reservations.
  • Wondering how long your airport dash will take under normal circumstances? Use our Cabo Airport Travel Time Estimator here!
  • Departures: Leave your hotel 30 minutes earlier than normal, especially for morning flights when south-to-north traffic backs up the most.
  • Rental-car returns: Gas up in advance; the Pemex stations nearest the roundabout often see queues when lanes shrink.

💡 Five Traveler Hacks To Beat The Back-Ups

  1. Fly Off-Peak – Mid-day arrivals dodge both morning commuters and evening return traffic.
  2. Pre-Book Private Transfers – A dedicated driver can hop local shortcuts faster than shared shuttles.
  3. Use The Toll Road – It’s longer in distance but often quicker when Highway 1 stalls (carry pesos for the booth).
  4. Stay In San José First – Flip your itinerary: spend the first nights near SJD, then move to Cabo San Lucas after the lane re-opens.

📅 What Happens After Mid-August?

If all goes to plan, the aqueduct relocation and detour surfacing will wrap by the third week of August, letting crews reopen the closed lane and accelerate bridge work.

Long-term, the completed overpass will separate cross-traffic, shaving an estimated 15 minutes off the airport–resort run—every future vacationer’s dream.

Until then, keep an eye on our daily Traveler Alerts page; we’ll hit the road ourselves to test drive the detour and report real-time transit times. Stay tuned, and safe travels from all of us at The Cabo Sun!
