There is an old “Cabo Anxiety” that hits everyone right before landing. You look out the window, see three other planes taxiing to the terminal, and your stomach drops. You brace yourself for the legendary “SJD Shuffle”—a sweaty, two-hour standing nightmare in the immigration hall.

We are here to tell you that the nightmare is (mostly) over.
At The Cabo Sun, we don’t just read press releases; we fly the routes. We recently landed at SJD Terminal 2 during a peak arrival window—simultaneously with three other international flights—to stress-test the system. We clicked the stopwatch the second the cabin door opened.
Keep in mind there are many factors at play and your experience may vary.

The result? 28 minutes.
That is not a typo. From stepping off the plane to standing on the curb with a cold beer in hand, it took less than half an hour. But before you high-five your travel partner, you need to understand why it was fast and the one specific rule that could send you back into the slow lane.
The Breakdown: Where The Time Goes
Here is exactly how our 28-minute sprint played out.
- The Walk (6 Minutes): SJD is not a massive airport like Heathrow or LAX. Unless you land at the absolute furthest tarmac spot, you are a quick walk from the immigration hall.
- Immigration (10 Minutes): This is where the game has changed. In the past, 500 people hitting the hall meant gridlock. Now, the E-Gates are chewing through lines with brutal efficiency.
- Baggage Claim (12 Minutes): Because you clear immigration so fast, you will likely beat your bag to the carousel. We waited roughly 8 minutes for the belt to start and 4 minutes to grab the gear.
The Verdict: The system works. Other than the chaos of Christmas week, reports of hour-long waits have largely vanished for the average solo traveler or couple.

The E-Gate Revolution (And How To Use It)
The reason we cleared a full hall in 10 minutes is the E-Gate system.
If you are traveling with a passport from the USA, Canada, or the UK, you no longer need to talk to an agent. You scan your passport, look at a camera, get a printed receipt, and walk out. It takes about 60 seconds per person.
Insider Tip: Do not lose the receipt the machine spits out. You need to hand it to a guard to exit the baggage area. If you lose it, you will be delayed.

The “Family Penalty”: Why You Might Still Wait
This is the caveat that trips people up. You cannot use the E-Gates if you are traveling with children.
The Mexican immigration rules are strict: Travelers must be 18 years or older to use the automated lanes.
If you are traveling with anyone under 18, your entire group must go to the manual “Assisted Lane” to speak with an officer.
- The Risk: If those three other planes we landed with were full of families, the manual line would have been 45+ minutes, not 10.
- The Strategy: If one parent travels with an adult child (18+) and the other with a minor, you could split up, but honestly, just stick together. It’s not worth the logistical headache of meeting up on the other side.

The Final Boss: The “Shark Tank”
You have your bags. You have your immigration receipt. You are 22 minutes into the process. You are almost free.
Then, you hit the “Shark Tank.”
This is the hallway between baggage claim and the sliding glass doors to the outside world. It is lined with official-looking people in uniforms asking, “Where is your transportation?” or offering “Taxi Information.”

Do not stop.
These are timeshare salespeople. They are not airport staff. They are not transportation officials. If you stop to answer a question, your “28-minute” exit time will turn into a 60-minute sales pitch. Keep your head down, sunglasses on, and walk until you feel the humidity of the outdoors.
The Bottom Line
If you are an adult couple traveling with carry-ons, you can realistically be in your Uber or private SUV 30 minutes after wheels down. The infrastructure at SJD has finally caught up to the volume.
But if you are bringing the kids? Pack snacks and download an extra movie on the iPad.
