These 5 U.S. Cities Have The Cheapest Nonstop Flights To Los Cabos This Winter

Share The Article

I’m in and out of Los Cabos constantly. It’s part of the job. And while our local team on the ground keeps me updated on the best tacos in San José or the traffic on the corridor, my job starts before I even land: finding a flight that doesn’t cost a fortune.

Cabo is booming. We are seeing over 520 flights a week touching down at SJD now. Usually, when a place gets this popular, prices skyrocket. But right now, we are seeing a weird (and welcome) trend. Because the airlines are fighting tooth and nail for market share, prices from specific U.S. hubs are dropping to crazy lows.

I’m talking under $400 for a nonstop round-trip ticket from some hubs. (even under $100 for lucky Californians!)

If you are looking to escape the cold this winter, these are the 5 cities offering the best value right now.

Delta plane coming in for a landing at Los Cabos International Airport

1. San Francisco (SFO)

The Price: Starting at ~$129 (Alaska Airlines, One Way)

Honestly, this is one of the best deals on the West Coast. The flight is just over three hours—barely enough time to watch a movie and have a drink—and you’re there.

The price war here is between Alaska and United. Alaska is offering “Saver” fares as low as $129 one way, and $298 Round-Trip.

The Catch: Pay attention to the baggage rules. Alaska’s Saver fare gets you a carry-on, but you’ll pay about $30 to check a bag. United is similar. Since Southwest stopped letting bags fly free earlier this month (a massive blow to loyalists), you have to do the math on luggage for every airline now. Even with the bag fee, $171 is a steal for Silicon Valley convenience.

2. Austin (AUS)

The Price: Starting at ~$412 (Round Trip, Southwest)

I see more Texans in Cabo every time I visit. It’s becoming their second home. Southwest knows this and is running roundtrip nonstop flights from Austin for around $412.

The flight is a breeze—two hours and forty minutes. This route is huge for what I call “scouting trips.” I know a lot of people fly down just to check out real estate or test the waters for relocation. If you’re in Central Texas, skipping the connection in Dallas or Houston saves you hours of headache.

3. New York (JFK/EWR)

The Price: Starting at ~$376 (Round Trip, United from Newark)

This one always blows my mind. The flight from NYC to Cabo is over six hours. That is a long haul. Yet, somehow, it’s one of the cheapest routes in the country right now.

United is flying from Newark (EWR) for $376 Round Trip.

Why is it so cheap? It’s the “Robin Hood” effect. The front of the plane is packed with people paying $1,400+ for business class seats. That premium revenue subsidizes the economy seats in the back. If you can handle six hours in economy, you are getting a transcontinental flight for less than the price of a dinner in Manhattan. Solid deal.

4. Denver (DEN)

The Price: Starting at ~$514 (Frontier)

Denver is a battleground. You have the legacy carriers versus the budget airlines, and the traveler wins. Frontier is advertising fares around $514.

The Reality Check: You have to respect the “Frontier Math.” That $185 base fare is just to get your body on the plane. If you want to bring a carry-on, breathe extra air, or pick a seat, you’re paying more. A carry-on is usually about $43 extra.

5. Seattle (SEA)

The Price: Starting at ~$356 (Roundtrip, Alaska)

For my friends in the Pacific Northwest, this is your escape hatch. Winter in Seattle is gray; Cabo is sunny and 80 degrees.

Alaska is are competing hard here, driving prices down to $356 for a round trip ticket. The flight is about four and a half hours. Considering the distance, this pricing is aggressive. It’s actually cheaper to fly Seattle to Cabo right now than it is to fly Seattle to some East Coast cities.

The “Insider” Cheat Code: Tijuana (CBX)

If you are in Southern California (San Diego/LA) and you want the absolute rock-bottom price, you skip the U.S. airports entirely.

San Diegans use the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) all the time; it’s a great travel hack. You walk across a bridge from San Diego directly into the Tijuana airport. From there, you can hop on Volaris or Viva Aerobus for as low as $104 round-trip. Yes, you have to cross the border, but for a $100 flight, it’s worth the extra twenty minutes of walking.

The Bottom Line

The days of blindly booking a flight are over. The gap between a “Saver” fare and a “Main Cabin” fare, plus the baggage fees, means you need to look at the total cost.

But if you are near one of these five hubs, you have no excuse. The water is warm, the margaritas are cold, and the flights are cheaper than a tank of gas.

See you down there.
