The Unspoken Rules of Tipping in Cabo For 2026: That Locals Wish You Knew

The meal is over, the ocean view is flawless, and the server hands you the leather checkbook. Instantly, the social anxiety hits.

Do I tip in pesos or dollars? Is 15 percent still enough? Did they already add the gratuity to the total?

Mental gymnastics at the end of a perfect night kill the vacation vibe. As Los Cabos transitions completely into an ultra-luxury destination in 2026, the cost of living for locals has skyrocketed. The tipping landscape has shifted to reflect this new economic reality.

The Unspoken Rules of Tipping in Cabo For 2026 That Locals Wish You Knew

We watch tourists stress over this every single day. Let’s eliminate the guesswork entirely. Here is the definitive, ground-truth blueprint for tipping in Los Cabos this year.

The Currency Rule: Pesos vs. Dollars

You can tip in either currency, but Mexican Pesos are always preferred. When you tip in US Dollars, the local worker takes a financial hit at the exchange house. If you must tip in USD, use pristine, untorn paper bills. Mexican banks will strictly reject torn foreign currency, making a damaged five-dollar bill entirely worthless to your bartender. Never tip in US coins; they cannot be exchanged.

Restaurants and Bars

This is where the rules have evolved the most in 2026. Because Cabo is now pricing itself alongside global luxury hubs, a 10 percent tip is no longer considered a good tip for standard service.

  • The Standard: 15 percent of the pre-tax bill is the baseline for good service.
  • The Premium: 20 percent is the expected standard for excellent, highly attentive service.
  • The Bar: Tip 1-2 USD or 20-40 pesos per drink.

The Pro Move: Always check your receipt for a line item labeled “Servicio” or “Propina.” Under Mexican federal consumer law (PROFECO), mandatory gratuity is technically illegal, but highly-trafficked tourist spots still sneak it onto the bill. Look closely before you accidentally tip twice.

The All-Inclusive Strategy

Your room rate covers the food and alcohol, but strategic cash tipping is the ultimate key to unlocking VIP treatment at a mega-resort.

  • The Bartender or Pool Server: Slipping your preferred pool bartender $20 USD or 400 pesos at the start of your first day is the ultimate power move. They will remember your face, memorize your order, and your glass will never be empty.
  • Housekeeping: These are the hardest working people on the property. Leave $5 USD or 100 pesos on your pillow every single morning. Do not wait until the end of the week to leave a lump sum. Staff rotations change daily, and tipping every morning ensures the specific person cleaning your room gets the cash.

High-End Excursions

When you book premium activities, tipping becomes a larger part of the financial equation.

  • Sportfishing and Yachts: You are tipping the entire crew, not just the captain. The standard is 15 to 20 percent of the total charter cost. Hand the cash directly to the captain at the end of the trip to distribute among the deckhands.
  • Golf Caddies: Cabo features some of the best golf courses on earth. A caddy reading the greens and carrying your bag expects $40 to $50 USD per player for an 18-hole round.

The Everyday Interactions

Do not forget the minor interactions that keep your vacation moving smoothly.

  • Airport Shuttles: Give your private driver $10 to $20 USD per group for a smooth ride and help with the luggage.
  • The Bellhop: When you arrive at your resort, the bell staff does the heavy lifting in the Baja heat so your vacation can start immediately. The standard rule is $2 to $5 USD (40 to 100 pesos) per bag delivered to your room.
  • Valet: A standard $2 to $5 USD when they retrieve your rental car is perfect.
  • The Supermarket: If you buy groceries at La Comer or Soriana, the people bagging your items do not receive a salary. They work exclusively for tips and are typically local students or seniors. Handing them 20 pesos is a simple act of respect that separates savvy travelers from oblivious tourists.

Restaurants include the taxes in your total BEFORE you apply the tip. It’s 16% of the bill. That means you are paying 15%-20% on the 16% tax amount as well. Since the restaurant does not give that extra to the government, it means the % you tip going to the restaurant and staff is increased. Of course the restaurant & wait staff are well aware of this artificial increase in the tip. Subtract out the amount of the taxes from your bill and tip on the cost of the food & drinks, or tip a lower percentage to account for the addition amount of the bill that includes the taxes. I find it an unethical and deceptive practice, and really annoying.
