The One Cabo Day Trip That Will Make You Feel Like You’ve Stepped Back in Time

We at The Cabo Sun love a good “wow, this still exists?” day trip—and El Triunfo delivers exactly that. Tucked in the Sierra de la Laguna about 2 hours north of Cabo San Lucas, this tiny former mining town feels like a time capsule you can actually walk through, smell the mesquite, and hear the piano keys from a bygone era.

Why El Triunfo Feels Frozen In Time

El Triunfo boomed after silver and gold were discovered in the 1860s and, by the late 1890s, it was the largest town in Baja California Sur. After the mines closed, the town slumbered for decades—until recent restorations revived its historic streets, museums, and cafés without sanding off the original character. You’ll literally navigate around brick smokestacks, 19th-century facades, and a cobbled main street that still whispers mining lore.

The head-turner is La Ramona, a 47-meter brick smokestack completed in 1890 by the El Progreso Mining Company. It’s the literal landmark of El Triunfo—and one of the most photogenic relics in southern Baja. Stroll the pathways around its base for context panels and sweeping desert-meets-mountain views.

Two Small Museums, Big Story

Start at the Museo Ruta de Plata (Mining History Museum). It’s compact but polished, connecting the dots between geology, boomtown life, and the global mix of people who landed here seeking fortune. The museum complex has blossomed into a cultural hub with on-site food and drink options (including a petite wine cellar) that make lingering easy. Always check the official site for current hours and ticketing.

Then pop into the Music Museum, a delightfully quirky salute to pianos and instruments that once filled the parlors of this prosperous town. It’s a quick visit but a charming one—especially if you’re traveling with history-minded kids or music lovers.

Newer to town is the Museum of the Vaqueros of California (MuVaCa), opened in 2024. It tells the 300-year story of Baja/Alta California ranching culture with bilingual, multimedia exhibits—exactly the kind of under-the-radar stop that turns a day trip into a favorite memory.

Eat Like You Mean It

You didn’t come all this way to skip lunch. Café El Triunfo is beloved for wood-fired pizzas, hearty sandwiches, and bakery treats; it’s right on the main drag and perfect for a slow midday break. Within the museum complex, you’ll also find El Minero, Margery’s Tea Room, and a tiny Toggle wine cellar for oysters, cheeses, and a shaded courtyard sip.

Getting There From Cabo

Set your sights for Highway 1, kilometer 163—that’s El Triunfo’s turn-in. From Cabo San Lucas, expect roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by car depending on traffic and stops. Prefer not to drive? Autobuses Águila runs service between Cabo San Lucas and El Triunfo in just under 3 hours.

Pair It With Another Easy Win

If you’re chasing culture over crowds, El Triunfo pairs nicely with a stop in Todos Santos or La Paz for sunset. We’ve covered why these small towns make stellar day trips—use our past guides as inspiration when sketching your route.

Practical Tips We’d Tell Our Best Friend

  • Go early to beat heat and bus groups; museums open mid-morning and the light is best for photography around La Ramona then. Confirm hours on the museum’s site before you roll.
  • Footwear matters. Streets are cobbled, paths are dusty—closed-toe shoes win here. (Your ankles will thank you later.)
  • Bring a card and some pesos. Most spots take cards, but small cafés and craft vendors can be cash-friendly. (Availability can vary in small towns.)
  • Sip slow. That courtyard glass at Toggle or a late pizza at Café El Triunfo is part of the magic—don’t rush the “time travel” with a to-go mindset.
