For years, the ferry connecting Baja California Sur to mainland Mexico has been a well-known secret for adventurous travelers and a vital lifeline for locals. It was a practical, no-frills way to cross the Sea of Cortez.
Well, that trip just got a massive, luxurious upgrade.
Yesterday, at the port in La Paz, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío officially welcomed the “Cabo Star” into the Baja Ferries fleet. This isn’t just another boat—it’s now the largest passenger ferry in all of Latin America, and it was specifically designed to be a game-changer for tourists.

So, What’s The Big Deal About This New Ship?
While the official announcement was full of talk about cargo units and economic development, the governor also highlighted a key detail for us: the ship’s mission is to ensure “quality and friendly service for its users.”
Here’s the translation for travelers: while the old ferries were functional, the new Cabo Star is designed with comfort and tourism in mind. Think more space, better amenities, and a focus on making the overnight journey a relaxing, enjoyable part of your vacation. With the capacity to move 250,000 passengers a year, this is a clear signal that the route is becoming a major tourist path, and this new vessel is the upgrade needed to serve it.

The Most Important Detail: It’s In La Paz, Not Cabo
Here is the crucial piece of information every Los Cabos traveler needs to know: The ferry departs from the Port of Pichilingue in La Paz, which is where the inauguration ceremony was held. It does not leave from the Cabo San Lucas marina.
But don’t worry, that’s part of the fun. La Paz is a stunning and scenic 2 to 2.5-hour drive north of the Los Cabos tourist area.
The Pro-Traveler Move: Make the drive an adventure. Rent a car and explore the incredible desert landscapes on your way up. Or, for a more relaxing option, the Aguila bus line offers comfortable and affordable coach service directly between Los Cabos and La Paz, letting you sit back and enjoy the view.

What This Upgrade Means For Your Next Cabo Trip
This isn’t just a bigger boat; it’s a better experience that opens up brand-new possibilities for your vacation.
- The “Surf & Turf” Vacation is Now Easier: You can now seamlessly combine a classic desert-and-beach resort vacation in Cabo with an authentic, colonial city experience in Mazatlán. Spend a few days exploring the historic cobblestone streets and world-famous Malecón on the mainland.

- A More Comfortable Journey: This new, modern ship makes the idea of an overnight crossing far more appealing to the average tourist, not just hardcore adventurers. It’s a comfortable and stable ride designed for everyone.
- An Accessible Adventure: The launch of the Cabo Star makes Los Cabos more than just a destination; it makes it a gateway.
As Governor Castro said, this ship boosts connectivity for the entire state. For travelers, that means the door to mainland Mexico is now wider and more welcoming than ever before.

Details please! What are the amenities on board, dining options, bar, cabins, etc. We took the Baja ferry from La Paz to Mazatlán in May of this year & it was a horrible experience! No available sleeper cabins a month in advance of traveling, loud TV’s going in every room where we were supposed to travel, eat & sleep, children running around all night screaming, etc. How will this new ship be an improvement? Maybe show some interior photos & go into more detail please.

@Shar, This is a great question! While this looks like a good idea there are too many uncertainties and it is difficult to verify sailing times and whether or not a cabin is available. Any future sailings planned from Los Cabos to Mazatlan? Also, impossible to use the website for Senor Air to make reservations. Too glitchy and I can't even send them an email! https://www.caboflightcenter.com/Contact-Us/contacto#/

Interested but when I went Baha Ferries site and it says NO further sailings. I would attach screenshot but it appears there is such option.
