It’s no secret that Los Cabos is full of luxurious hotels owned by some of the best luxury brands in the hospitality industry.
The destination is even home to a total of 14 “super luxury” hotels as well, so Los Cabos is THE place to go for superior luxury.
This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise that 10 resorts in Los Cabos just received Michelin recognition.
Read on to find out more about this prestigious recognition and which Los Cabos hotels made the list.
The World-Famous Michelin Guide
The world-famous Michelin Guide dates back to 1900, when two French brothers, Andre and Edouard Michelin, invented it to encourage vehicle owners to travel more.
The story goes that they wanted more people to travel so that their tires would wear out faster and require more frequent tire purchases.
To do this they added lists of hotels and restaurants in France to it so people would have a reason to travel.
Mexico In The Michelin Guide
Mexico was just featured for the first time in the Michelin Guide this year, with restaurants throughout the country awarded stars for the first time.
A total of 18 restaurants across five states received one or two stars, one of which is located in Los Cabos, Cocina de Autor, in Cabo San Lucas.
Now, with the new key rating system for hotels being launched, Mexico has hotels in the guide as well, a total of 87, and 10 of them are in Los Cabos.
Many of the hotels that received this coveted recognition have also won other awards as well.
The Michelin Guide’s Ratings
It wasn’t until the 1920s that the Michelin Guide started rating restaurants with the star rating system.
The key rating system for hotels didn’t come until decades later.
It was just launched this year.
The New Key Ratings For Hotels
The key rating system is similar to the star rating system. Hotels can be awarded with one, two, or three keys.
All hotels in the Michelin Guide are eligible to receive one or more Michelin keys.
The key ratings, according to the Michelin Guide website, are:
- One Key – A very special stay.
- Two Keys – An exceptional stay.
- Three Keys – An extraordinary stay.
How Hotels Are Selected For A Michelin Key
The Michelin Guide deploys a team of experts to scrutinize each hotel, and that gets a key to ensure that it meets five criteria.
Those criteria include:
- Excellence in architecture and interior design.
- Quality and consistency of service.
- Overall personality and character.
- Value for the price.
- Significant contribution to the neighborhood or setting.
Each hotel that gets one or more keys must meet all five of these standards.
Los Cabos Hotels With One Michelin Keys
Three of the Los Cabos hotels that made the list received one Michelin Key.
As mentioned above, one key indicates that the hotel offers “a very special stay.”
The Los Cabos hotels that received one key are:
- The Cape, A Thompson Hotel
- Nobu Hotel Los Cabos
- Viceroy Los Cabos
Los Cabos Hotels With Two Michelin Keys
Seven Los Cabos hotels landed in the guide with two Michelin Keys.
These hotels are even more exquisite, consistently providing guests with an “exceptional stay”.
The Los Cabos hotels that were awarded with two keys include:
- Esperanza, Auberge Resorts Collection
- Montage Los Cabos
- Chileno Bay Resorts & Residences, Auberge Resorts Collection
- One&Only Palmilla Resort
- Zadun, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve
- Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal
- Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort
So far, no Los Cabos hotels have been awarded with three keys, but this is only the beginning of the newly launched Michelin Key rating system.
All of the Los Cabos hotels in the Michelin Guide can be booked here, on the Michelin Guide website.
