Spring Break In Cabo Runs $150 A Day Not Including Hotel: Here Are 5 Ways To Save

Share The Article

If you are heading to Los Cabos for Spring Break this year, you probably already know that your hotel wasn’t cheap.

But according to new data released by the Mayor of Los Cabos, Christian Agúndez Gómez, the “daily burn” for tourists is climbing just as fast as the room rates.

In a press conference this week regarding the upcoming season, the Mayor revealed that the average Spring Break visitor is now spending $150 USD per day purely on “discretionary” items—that means food, drinks, and activities, not including their hotel or flight.

I laughed when I read that statistic because I remember my first trip to Cabo. I spent $150 by 2:00 PM on the first day because I didn’t know what I was doing. I bought the $22 margarita by the pool. I took the $80 taxi. I paid the “Gringo Price” for everything.

With 50,000 students set to descend on Cabo San Lucas over the next five weeks, the destination is bracing for a massive economic injection. But if you aren’t looking to blow your entire semester’s budget in three days, you need a strategy.

Here are 5 ways to beat the system, based on my own painful trial and error in Baja.

1. Ditch the “Tourist Taxi” (My #1 Rule)

Transportation is the silent budget killer in Cabo. I once paid $40 USD to go 2.5 miles down the corridor because I was too lazy to open an app. Never again.

A round-trip taxi from a corridor hotel (like the Hilton or Marquis) to downtown Cabo San Lucas can easily run $80-$100 USD. Do that three times, and you have spent enough to buy a flight home.

  • The Fix: I use Uber exclusively. It is legal, safe, and the cars are usually cleaner than the taxis.
  • The “Gate” Trick: Here is the nuance the apps won’t tell you: Some hotels still have “agreements” with the taxi unions and won’t let Ubers drive up to the main lobby to pick you up. If the app shows the driver is stuck at the entrance, just walk 2 minutes to the main security gate. It saves you $30 literally every time you leave the property.

2. Eat “Off the Strip” (The 3-Block Rule)

If you eat at the marina or on Medano Beach with your toes in the sand, you are paying a “View Tax.” The food is usually fine, but you are paying $25 for tacos that cost $2 three blocks away.

  • The Fix: Walk inland. My go-to spot is Tacos Guss in downtown Cabo San Lucas. It is a local institution. You sit on a plastic chair, you watch the trompo (pork) spinning on the spit, and you eat the best Al Pastor of your life for about $2.50 a taco.
  • Another Gem: If you want seafood, go to Mariscos Las Tres Islas. It’s where the locals eat. A michelada and a ceviche tostada there will ruin you for hotel food forever, and it costs pennies on the dollar.

3. The “OXXO” Ritual

The “Daily Spend” of $150 is mostly driven by alcohol prices at beach clubs. If you are drinking $14 beers at the swim-up bar all day, you will go broke.

  • The Personal Fix: The moment I check into a hotel, I find the nearest OXXO (Mexico’s ubiquitous convenience store). I buy a 12-pack of Pacifico, a big bottle of water, and a bag of chips. Honestly, even at an all-inclusive, sometimes it is nice to have your own supply.
  • The Math: A beer at OXXO costs about $1.50 USD. A beer at your resort costs $10-$14. Pre-game on your balcony. Watch the sunset from your room with a store-bought cold one. You get the same view for 10% of the price.

4. Master the “Marina Walk” (Don’t Book on the Dock)

If you walk the marina, you will be approached by 50 guys in polo shirts selling boat tours. “Amigo! Glass bottom boat? The Arch?”

Pro tip: DON’T make the mistake of wearing a camera around your neck unless you want every single vendor on planet Earth offering to take you to the best place to take photos 😂.

  • The Trap: They quote prices based on your shoes. If you look like you just got off a yacht, the price is $60. If you hesitate, it drops to $40.
  • The Personal Fix: I never engage on the dock unless I’m ready to negotiate hard. I usually book my activities online (Viator or Cabo Adventures) beforehand so the price is fixed and fair.
  • If You Must Haggle: If you want a water taxi, the real price is about $15-$20 USD per person. If they say $40, just smile, say “No gracias,” and keep walking. They will chase you and drop the price immediately.

5. Happy Hour is a Lifestyle

You don’t have to drink cheap tequila to save money; you just have to drink at the right time.

  • The Personal Fix: I plan my “going out” schedule around the 2-for-1 windows. Almost every bar in Cabo San Lucas—even the touristy ones—has a Happy Hour, usually between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
  • The Strategy: This is when I go to the expensive places. I’ll go to a rooftop or a beach club at 4:00 PM, enjoy the premium ambiance and the sunset, pay half price for my drinks, and then leave for dinner before the “nightclub” pricing kicks in.

Be Kind To Your Wallet

Cabo is expensive by design. The entire system is set up to separate you from your dollars as efficiently as possible.

But the $150/day average comes from tourists who take the path of least resistance. With a little friction—walking a few blocks, waiting 5 minutes for an Uber, and buying your own beer—you can cut that daily cost in half and honestly have a more authentic trip.
