Hold onto your hats and get your passports ready! The latest vacation buzz is in, and our very own slice of paradise, San Jose del Cabo, has officially surfed its way to the Number Two spot on the list of most popular international destinations for American travelers this summer! That’s right, according to a freshly dropped report from the travel gurus at Allianz Partners USA, our charming corner of Baja California Sur is where it’s AT.

Now, we’ve got to give a little nod to the reigning king, the tourism behemoth Cancun, which just managed to snag the top position. (We’re coming for that crown, Cancun, just you wait!) But let’s be honest, silver looks pretty darn good on San Jose del Cabo, and it tells you something big: people are craving the unique magic we’ve got brewing down here.
So, what’s the secret sauce? Why is everyone suddenly googling “San Jose del Cabo” faster than you can say “margarita”? Well, if you’ve never had the pleasure, let me paint you a picture. Think of San Jose del Cabo as the effortlessly cool, slightly more mysterious cousin in the Los Cabos family. It’s got all the stunning good looks – the dramatic desert landscapes tumbling into the sparkling Sea of Cortez – but with a vibe that’s more “chilled art gallery opening” than “spring break foam party.”

Forget those elbow-to-elbow crowded beaches for a moment. Imagine yourself meandering down the enchanting cobblestone streets of our historic downtown, a place literally dripping with colonial charm and vibrant bougainvillea. The buildings themselves are like works of art, painted in hues that would make a sunset jealous.
And speaking of art, the historic downtown is the heart of a vibrant Art District. While the famed communal Art Walk, where galleries and artisans fill the streets with creative energy, delights visitors every Thursday evening typically from November through June, the area’s many impressive galleries showcase incredible local and international talent year-round. You can still soak in that creative atmosphere and discover unique pieces even during the peak summer months.

And the beaches? ¡Ay, Dios mío! Whether you’re looking to catch some rays on a serene stretch of golden sand, watch the pelicans dive-bomb for their dinner, or even try your hand at surfing some surprisingly epic waves, San Jose del Cabo delivers. The waters here are a stunning shade of blue, and the coastline offers everything from calm coves perfect for a paddle to dramatic cliffs that make for an epic photo backdrop.

But wait, there’s more! This isn’t just a pretty face. Adventure seekers, we see you! World-class sport fishing? Check. Kayaking through the tranquil San Jose Estuary, a protected wildlife sanctuary teeming with exotic birds? Double check. It’s a nature lover’s dream and a fantastic way to see a different side of Cabo.
And let’s talk about the food, because, honestly, it deserves its own parade. San Jose del Cabo has become a serious foodie hotspot, with an incredible farm-to-table scene that’s all about fresh, local, and oh-so-delicious. From gourmet dining experiences under the stars to tucking into the freshest seafood tacos you’ll ever taste with your toes practically in the sand, your palate is in for a serious treat.

What really sets San Jose del Cabo apart, though, is its soul. It’s authentically Mexican, with a warmth and hospitality from the locals that makes you feel like an old friend from the moment you arrive. It’s the kind of place where you can genuinely unwind, sip on that perfectly crafted margarita as the sky explodes into a kaleidoscope of color at sunset, and just…breathe. It’s less about the non-stop party (though you can find a good time if you look!) and more about soaking in the rich culture, the stunning scenery, and the good life.

The Allianz Partners report, which analyzed just under seven million itineraries for trips between May and September, clearly shows that Americans are seeking out these kinds of rich experiences. “American travelers are starting to dethaw from a long winter and are flocking to sunny beaches across the U.S. and abroad,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners USA.
Of course, San Jose del Cabo and Cancun weren’t the only international destinations making waves. The report also highlighted other fantastic spots Americans are jetting off to, including London, England taking the bronze; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Montego Bay, Jamaica; the Canadian charm of Calgary; the ever-romantic Paris, France; our other Mexican amigo Puerto Vallarta; and the luck of the Irish in Dublin. It’s great to see so much of the world being explored!
