Rock n roll star Sammy Hagar is no stranger to Cabo, proving his love for the Mexican vacation destination over and over again.  With his frequent visits to the area, his ownership of the much-loved Cabo Wabo Cantina, and his making Cabo the location for his birthday celebrations almost every year for the last 32, it’s obvious he is fond of the area.  Now, Hagar has made yet another visit to Los Cabos, at least the second one this year, to perform his new music at Cabo Wabo Cantina.

The former member of the band Van Halen, who currently has a successful solo career but often plays with the band The Circle, performed new songs along with his classic number that launched his solo career, “I Can’t Drive 55.”  Other members of Van Halen are part of The Circle, including drummer Jason Bonham and bassist Michael Anthony, and were present for the show.  Sammy Hagar & The Circle just released a new album called Crazy Times

On the new album is a song called “Be Still,” which Hagar recently discussed his feelings about.  He referred to his lyric writing and his general habit of writing his own lyrics and how this particular song made him feel.  He said, “The kind of singer I am, I have to relate to the lyrics that’s why I’ve always written my own lyrics 99% of the time. But when I read these words, it was like the song I hadn’t written yet I felt that close to the lyrics, so the music came easy. I love this song.”

Hagar loves the song so much that they played it for fans who attended the performance at Cabo Wabo Cantina.  This is the second time this year that the singer and songwriter has performed at the popular Cabo San Lucas bar.  The first time was for his 75th birthday celebration, which took place over a three-day period that included multiple performances at Cabo Wabo.

Mr. Hagar’s birthday celebration included three days of concerts at the bar, where he performed with his well-known backup band, the “Wabos,” also referred to as the “Waboritas.”  The multi-day event took place October 9th, 11th, and 13th, following the end of a summer tour for the rock n roll star.  The birthday bash was a return to Cabo after it had to be held elsewhere the prior two years due to the pandemic, during which time the bash was held on California’s Catalina Island.

Cabo Wabo

This year marked the 32nd Birthday Bash held by Sammy Hagar and the 28th to take place at the Cabo Wabo Cantina.  In addition to the two times, it was moved due to the pandemic, the celebration also had to be relocated twice due to Cabo being affected by hurricanes.  Tickets for the annual bash are sold well in advance, and this year were offered to randomly chosen fans first, then on a first-come, first-served basis, and then finally, there were a limited number of tickets offered for sale, also on a first-come, first-served basis, on the day before each show.

Cabo Land's End

Cabo Wabo Cantina is the brainchild of Sammy Hagar, who, upon visiting Cabo San Lucas in the 80s, long before it was the vacation destination it is today, fell in love with the area.  As the story goes, Hagar decided he wanted to open a simple tequila bar with a stage where he and others could perform.  By the time the bar opened in 1990, it was much bigger than Hagar expected, and although it has had its ups and downs over the years, has become the hugely popular club it is today.

Anybody vacationing in Los Cabos can visit Cabo Wabo Cantina, and you never know who you might see playing there.  If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll visit on a day the club’s famous founder, Sammy Hagar, is there.
