As hurricane season unfolds, we at The Cabo Sun are your dedicated storm trackers, committed to bringing you the latest updates. This week, authorities in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, are keeping a watchful eye on a developing weather system in the Pacific Ocean. The Los Cabos Municipal Civil Protection Department has started to closely track a zone of low pressure located off the coast of Chiapas. This system has the potential to become the second named tropical storm of the 2025 season.

Growing Chances of Development

According to the latest reports, this low-pressure area currently has a 10% chance of forming into a cyclone within the next 48 hours. However, that likelihood jumps significantly to an 80% chance over the next seven days. Francisco Cota Márquez, who leads the Civil Protection agency, confirmed the active monitoring. He stated, “We are monitoring the development of this low pressure, which, if it continues, could approach the peninsula over the course of next week. Therefore, we are constantly monitoring it.” If the system does strengthen as it might, it would be named “Barbara.” This would mark the second tropical storm to form this season, signaling an active start to the storm period.

An Active Hurricane Season Predicted

The forecast for the current hurricane season suggests a busy period ahead. Experts predict the formation of between 16 and 20 significant weather systems in total. Out of these, it’s anticipated that eight to nine will develop into tropical storms. Looking further, officials expect between four and five of these systems to reach hurricane status as Category 1 or 2 storms. Worryingly, the forecast also includes the possibility of four to six major hurricanes, which are those that reach Category 3, 4, or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, indicating very powerful and potentially destructive storms.

Alvin’s Gentle Pass: Welcome Rain and Relief

Los Cabos recently saw Tropical Storm Alvin pass by, bringing a wave of relief along with much-needed rain rather than significant trouble. While the storm prompted authorities like the Municipal Civil Protection Council to remain on high alert, Alvin’s visit was mostly marked by moderate rainfall that benefited the thirsty desert landscapes and helped replenish vital underground water reserves. Preliminary reports confirmed only minor issues like temporary, localized flooding and small rural landslides, with no significant risk to people or property. Overall, the region is now enjoying slightly fresher air and greener scenery thanks to Alvin’s gentler touch.

Staying Prepared is Key

With these predictions in mind, Civil Protection is strongly urging the public to stay informed. They advise everyone to get their information from official channels and to pay close attention to any recommendations that might be issued if the storm system, potentially “Barbara,” heads towards the region. Officials emphasize that prevention and preparation are the most important steps people can take to reduce risks associated with tropical storms and hurricanes. Taking steps now can make a big difference if a storm does impact the area.
