One of the things tourists enjoy the most about visiting the popular vacation destination of Los Cabos is indulging in the many culinary delights of the region.
Authentic Mexican restaurants, taquerias, seafood, and street food top the list for many visitors.
But during the summer months, the excessive heat can cause food to be dangerous, and a number of food establishments have been shut down to protect tourists’ health because of this.
Food Establishments Closed For Business
Health department officials have visited food establishments throughout Los Cabos to verify the proper storage of food items that should be refrigerated.
Commissioner of the State Commission for the Protection of Health Risks (COEPRIS), José Manuel Larumbe Pineda, commented on the operation, saying that “In addition to all the verifications that are carried out daily, we seek that where fish and seafood are sold, which are the seasonal products, they have the measures you will need of refrigeration, temperature, cleaning and conservation.”
So far, a total of eight food establishments have been shut down as a result of the inspections.
Dangers Of Food Not Being Stored Properly
Eating food that is not stored properly can cause a myriad of problems that can ruin your Los Cabos vacation or worse.
Gastrointestinal diseases caused by food-borne illnesses are the biggest concern and can cause severe sickness.
Two of the most common foodborne illnesses are salmonella and E. coli, both of which can cause some very uncomfortable symptoms.

The Most Dangerous Foods Without Proper Storage
While all food items should be stored properly to ensure that they are safe to eat, some are more dangerous than others if they’re not.
Chicken, eggs, pork, beef, vegetables, fruits, and even processed food items not stored at the right temperature or handled incorrectly can cause salmonella.
E. coli is typically caused by eating undercooked ground meat, contaminated vegetables, or raw cheeses and milk.

Reporting Businesses For Food Handling Violations
Although many people don’t take the time to report food handling violations, it’s an important step in reducing food-borne illness.
The State Commission for the Protection of Health Risks is requesting that violations be reported.
This can be done at the COEPRIS website.
Choosing Safe Dining Options
Sometimes it’s pretty easy to distinguish the safe dining options from the not-so-safe options.
The cleanliness of a dining establishment is the first indicator of whether or not it might be safe to eat at.
Additionally, spoiled food typically has a very foul smell, so this is another thing to pay attention to when entering a dining establishment.
Last but not least, reviews of a restaurant or other dining outlet can also be a great indicator of the establishment’s reputation for serving good food.
Why All-Inclusive Resort Restaurants Are A Safer Alternative
Restaurants located within the many all-inclusive resorts in Los Cabos may be the safest option when it comes to dining out.
This is because they generally have state-of-the-art kitchens equipped with the best coolers and freezers, as well as highly trained chefs and kitchen staff.
Additionally, the resorts that these restaurants are in don’t risk losing power because they typically have generators for backup, and losing power during the summer is one of the biggest causes of food spoiling and becoming dangerous.
Where To Eat In Los Cabos
Between Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and the all-inclusive resorts in Los Cabos, there are literally hundreds of dining options.
You can basically have anything you want, from authentic Mexican food to expertly prepared Italian dishes.
Just choose wisely because you don’t want spoiled food to spoil your Los Cabos vacation.
