Anyone who has ever walked the boardwalk of the Cabo San Lucas Marina knows the resident sea lions are the unofficial mascots of the city. You will see them lounging on the backs of fishing boats, barking for scraps, and swimming right up to the docks. Because they are so accustomed to human presence, it is incredibly easy for visitors to forget that they are dealing with wild, feral animals.
Unfortunately, that false sense of security has recently crossed a dangerous line.
In just the past week, two different individuals have been attacked and bitten by sea lions right in the heart of the tourist marina, requiring emergency medical transport. Now, local authorities and the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department are stepping in with a firm reminder for all incoming travelers: keep your hands to yourself.
Here is what is happening on the docks and how to navigate the marina safely.

The Recent Marina Incidents
The Cabo San Lucas Fire Department confirmed that on the afternoon of February 25th, they were dispatched to one of the main docks in the tourist marina for a medical emergency. A person had sustained a bite from a sea lion and required immediate transport to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
What makes this alarming is that it wasn’t an isolated incident. Authorities detailed that this was the second sea lion bite they responded to in the exact same area within a single week.

The “Water Puppy” Trap
Why are tourists suddenly getting bitten? It almost always comes down to human error and treating a 600-pound marine mammal like a golden retriever.
- The Trap: You see local fishermen tossing bait to a sea lion named “Pancho” as their boat pulls into the harbor. The animal looks trained, happy, and entirely harmless. Tourists naturally want to get closer for a selfie or reach out to touch it.
- The Reality: These animals possess incredibly sharp teeth designed for tearing apart thick fish and squid. They are highly territorial and unpredictable. If they feel crowded, threatened, or mistake your outstretched hand for a piece of fish, they will strike with lightning speed.
- The Fix: Treat the marina docks like a safari, not a petting zoo. Maintain a physical barrier of at least several feet between you and any marine life.

The Official Warning
Following the second hospitalization, the Fire Department issued a blunt, categorical warning to all visitors and locals operating in the marina area.
They emphasized that despite their frequent interactions with boats, these marine mammals are entirely feral, and close-quarters interaction is inherently unsafe.
The official directive is clear: feeding the sea lions is strictly prohibited, and deliberately approaching them is not allowed under any circumstances.
