If you have flown into Los Cabos (SJD) in the past, you know “The Dread.”
You walk off the plane, turn the corner into the immigration hall in Terminal 2, and see a winding snake of hundreds of people waiting for an officer to stamp their passports.
But recently, the airport flipped the switch on a row of Automated E-Gates. When they work, they can get you from the plane to the baggage claim in less than 5 minutes. When they don’t, it’s usually because the person in front of you doesn’t know the rules.
Here is the definitive guide on who is actually eligible to skip the line in 2026 and how to use the machines without looking like a rookie.

The Eligibility List: Who Can Use Them?
The E-Gates are not open to everyone. They are strictly for tourists holding biometric passports (the ones with the little camera/chip icon on the cover) from specific countries.
You CAN use the E-Gates if you hold a passport from:
- North America: USA, Canada, Mexico.
- Europe: United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and most EU nations (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, etc.).
- Asia/Pacific: Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand.

You CANNOT use the E-Gates if:
- You are a Resident: If you have Mexican Residency (Temporal or Permanente), you must see an officer to get your status stamped correctly. If you use the E-Gate, you will enter as a tourist and potentially mess up your residency status.
- You are under 18: This is the big one. NO MINORS. Even if your 16-year-old looks like an adult, the machine will reject them. Families traveling with children must go to the manual booths.
- You have a damaged passport: If the chip reader can’t read your book, you are going to the back of the line.

The “Clueless Traveler” Guide: How Not To Be “That Guy”
The E-Gates are incredibly fast, but they are unforgiving. The main reason lines back up is user error. It’s a special kind of frustrating to get stuck behind the person who seems to be traveling and using technology for the first time in their entire lives, but we’ve been there.
If you want to breeze through and not be “that guy”, follow this 3-Step Protocol:
1. The “Strip Down” (Before you step in)
Do not wait until you are inside the gate to adjust your outfit. The camera uses facial recognition.
- Glasses: OFF (even if they are prescription).
- Hats: OFF.
- Masks: OFF.
- Pro Tip: Hold your boarding pass and passport in your hand; put your phone away.
2. The Scan (The Friction Point)
Open your passport to the photo page. Place it face down on the glass reader and hold it flat and keep it there.
- The Mistake: People slide it in and let go. The page curls up, the machine can’t read it, and the red light starts flashing. Hold it down firmly until the gate opens.
3. The Receipt (Do Not Throw This Away)
The machine will spit out a small paper receipt. This is your Visa (FMM).
- Crucial: Do not crumble this up or leave it in the machine. You need to keep this receipt to scan a QR code later to download your official digital entry form. You may also need to show this receipt when you leave the country.

If you are an adult traveling solo or with other adults from the US or Canada, the E-Gates are a game-changer. You can bypass the hour-long wait and be at the margaritas in minutes, especially if you only pack a carry-on.
But if you are traveling with kids, do yourself a favor: skip the drama and head straight for the officer lanes.
You will get turned away from the E-Gates anyway, and nobody wants to do the “Walk of Shame” back to the end of the snake line.
