Walk down the golden sand of Medano Beach on any given afternoon, and you will immediately hear the roar of engines. The bay of Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed epicenter of motorized water sports in Baja, and renting a jet ski to bounce across the waves with the famous Arch in the background is a massive bucket-list item for tourists.

But renting a personal watercraft (PWC) in Mexico is not the same highly regulated experience you might find back home. The beach is flooded with independent vendors, aggressive middlemen, and varying levels of equipment maintenance.

If you just hand a wad of cash to the first guy who approaches you on the sand, you are opening yourself up to broken equipment, hidden fees, or outright extortion. Before you strap on a life jacket and hit the throttle, here are the four non-negotiable things you must check to ensure your jet ski rental is safe and scam-free.

1. The 360-Degree Video (Avoiding the Damage Scam)

This is the single most common extortion tactic deployed by shady water sports vendors in Los Cabos, and it catches excited tourists off guard every single day.

• The Trap: You hand over your credit card or a cash deposit, ride for 30 minutes, and return to the beach. The vendor immediately points to a deep scratch or a crack in the fiberglass hull, claims you hit another boat, and aggressively demands $500 in cash to cover the “damages.”
• The Reality: That scratch was already there. The vendor uses the same pre-existing damage to extort multiple tourists a week.
• The Fix: Before you even put one foot on the jet ski, pull out your smartphone. Take a continuous, slow, 360-degree video of the entire machine, clearly documenting every single scratch, dent, and ding. Make sure the vendor sees you filming. This immediately signals that you are not an easy target, and it gives you undeniable proof of the machine’s condition before you took the keys.

2. The Engine Kill Switch (The Safety Non-Negotiable)

Jet skis are heavy, incredibly powerful machines operating in a bay packed with water taxis, luxury yachts, and swimmers. You need to know the machine will stop if things go wrong.

• The Trap: Unlicensed or budget vendors will often rent out older machines that have been poorly maintained, meaning critical safety features have been bypassed or broken.
• The Reality: Every jet ski is manufactured with an engine shut-off clip (a lanyard). One end attaches to the ignition, and the other end physically clips to your life vest. If you hit a rogue wave and get bucked off the seat, the lanyard pulls the key out and kills the engine instantly, preventing the 800-pound machine from running over you or plowing into a crowded beach.
• The Fix: Check the lanyard. If the vendor tries to hand you a machine where the kill switch is broken, missing, or permanently taped down, walk away immediately.

3. The Boundary Briefing (The No-Wake Zone)

A legitimate, professional operation cares about the safety of the entire beach, not just your 30-minute rental fee.

• The Trap: The vendor takes your money, points at the horizon, and tells you to “have fun.”
• The Reality: The water directly off Medano Beach is highly congested with swimmers and paddleboarders. Local maritime regulations require all motorized watercraft to operate at a strict 10 mph “no-wake” speed until they are safely past the designated buoy lines.
• The Fix: A reputable operator will give you a clear, firm safety briefing before you launch. They will point out the exact buoys you must pass before you can hit the throttle, and they will explicitly warn you to stay a safe distance away from the Arch (where scuba divers and snorkeling tours are clustered). If they don’t brief you on the boundaries, they are running a reckless operation.

4. The “Middleman” Markup

You do not have to walk far in Cabo to find someone offering you a “great deal” on a wave runner.

• The Trap: A friendly guy on the marina boardwalk or walking down the beach approaches you offering a cheap jet ski rental. You pay him, and he walks you a quarter-mile down the sand to a completely different guy with the actual jet skis.
• The Reality: You just paid a massive commission to an unlicensed middleman. Because the actual jet ski owner now has to split the fee with the street promoter, they will often cut your ride time short by 10 or 15 minutes to compensate.
• The Fix: Never hand cash to a random promoter on the street. Walk directly up to the physical, branded water sports tents permanently stationed on the sand at Medano Beach, or book your rental directly through a verified online tour operator. Dealing directly with the owner guarantees you get the full time you paid for.

Renting a jet ski and launching off the Cabo coastline is an adrenaline rush that you absolutely should experience. But you have to treat the transaction with a healthy dose of skepticism.
